Nissan to build Murano in Mississippi; Canton plant adds jobs

Nissan Motor Co. will assemble its Murano crossover vehicle at its Mississippi plant beginning in 2014.

It would be the eighth model that Nissan assembles at its Mississippi plant just north of Jackson.

"We're currently building seven different vehicles, and there's not a lot of plants around the world that build seven different vehicles," Canton Nissan Vice President of Manufacturing Dan Bednarzyk said.

The company made the announcement Thursday at a ceremony that included Gov. Phil Bryant, part of a year of celebrations of the plant's 10th anniversary.

"This was the beginning. This changed the dynamic for economic development in Mississippi," Bryant said.

The company already assembles the Altima sedan, Armada and Xterra SUVs, Titan and Frontier pickup trucks and NV commercial and passenger vans in Canton, which accounts for 40 percent of Nissan vehicles in the U.S.

After the Murano is added, the number will climb higher. Officials said the company's goal is to manufacture 85 percent of its vehicles in North America.

Nissan officials said they would also set out a clearer route for temporary workers at the plant to join the ranks of Nissan's full-time employees.

Stephanie Sutton said her life changed almost 10 years ago when she was hired by Nissan. She is now paying for her two children to go to college.

"There's a lot of people that want to be here, and this job, this place, can change a lot of lives," Sutton said.
