98% Mud

All Critics (93) | Top Critics (27) | Fresh (90) | Rotten (2)

"Mud" isn't just a movie. It's the firm confirmation of a career.

"Mud" unfolds at its own pace, revealing its story in slivers. The performances are outstanding, especially from Sheridan, who plays tough, sweet, vulnerable and confused with equal conviction.

The film is drenched in the humidity and salty air of a Delta summer, often recalling the musical, aphoristic cadences of Sam Shepard, who happens to appear in a supporting role.

A wonderful, piquant modern-day variation on "Huckleberry Finn.''

One of the most creatively rich and emotionally rewarding movies to come along this year.

It's a movie that holds out hope for the movies' future.

This is no Southern Gothic pastiche but a convincing portrait of a South rarely seen onscreen, the South of Walmarts and water moccasins, of Piggy-Wiggly and punk rock.

I liked Mud. What's frustrating is feeling as if I could have loved it.

It's a lovely, coherent piece of storytelling, with a unique sense of place. Nichols has carved out a niche as a distinctive film-maker.

With Mud, Jeff Nichols demonstrates once again that he's that rare breed of filmmaker who prefers to bury himself in the dirt of rural America rather than carve his initials into the concrete of sprawling urbanity.

Nichols weaves it all together with consummate skill and a little black pepper.

It's rare that films manage to capture the actual experience of what it is like to be a child, but 'Mud' seems to nail the ethos.

Mud is a captivating drama with well-rounded characters and fantastic performances from its three leads.

...a respectful, storyteller's approach to rural America. No mockery, no Hollywood-knows-better, no nonsense. That kind of thing is in shorter supply than the universe's collective desire for McConaughey to return to rom-coms.

Jeff Nichols' script for Mud is a lot like the Mississippi River that serves as a backdrop for the tale of unrequited love. There are times it is big and powerful and other times when it becomes so serene it's easy to forget the depths that hide below.

Mud combines the poignance of a boy coming to terms with life's realities with the excitement of top-notch suspense.

This densely atmospheric film could have used more Mark Twain-like adventure and less dreary adult intrigue.

...a movie about relationships that are tenuous and inescapable, desperate and fraught with misplaced romance.

Set in Arkansas, Mud captures the rhythm of the South in a way few films do.

Mud, from the Austin-based writer/director Jeff Nichols, is many things at once, and all enriched by David Wingo's double-stop, aching, stringed score.

"Mud" is a powerful story of love, friendship and loyalties.

"Mud" is a terrific American film that is destined to be a classic. McConaughey is selecting superior roles as he matures into one of our finest actors. Now that's something no critic would have written 10 years ago.

The kind of film where small gestures and vignettes convey more than long speeches possibly could.

An evocative drama set at the precipice of adulthood.

McConaughey's resurgence is a glorious thing, and it continues with Mud.

Grocery delivery service is greener than driving to the store

Apr. 29, 2013 ? At the end of a long day, it can be more convenient to order your groceries online while sitting on the living room couch instead of making a late-night run to the store. New research shows it's also much more environmentally friendly to leave the car parked and opt for groceries delivered to your doorstep.

University of Washington engineers have found that using a grocery delivery service can cut carbon dioxide emissions by at least half when compared with individual household trips to the store. Trucks filled to capacity that deliver to customers clustered in neighborhoods produced the most savings in carbon dioxide emissions.

"A lot of times people think they have to inconvenience themselves to be greener, and that actually isn't the case here," said Anne Goodchild, UW associate professor of civil and environmental engineering. "From an environmental perspective, grocery delivery services overwhelmingly can provide emissions reductions."

Consumers have increasingly more grocery delivery services to choose from. AmazonFresh operates in the Seattle area, while Safeway's service is offered in many U.S. cities. FreshDirect delivers to residences and offices in the New York City area. Last month, Google unveiled a shopping delivery service experiment in the San Francisco Bay Area, and UW alumni recently launched the grocery service Geniusdelivery in Seattle.

As companies continue to weigh the costs and benefits of offering a delivery service, Goodchild and Erica Wygonik, a UW doctoral candidate in civil and environmental engineering, looked at whether using a grocery delivery service was better for the environment, with Seattle as a test case. In their analysis, they found delivery service trucks produced 20 to 75 percent less carbon dioxide than the corresponding personal vehicles driven to and from a grocery store.

They also discovered significant savings for companies -- 80 to 90 percent less carbon dioxide emitted -- if they delivered based on routes that clustered customers together, instead of catering to individual household requests for specific delivery times.

"What's good for the bottom line of the delivery service provider is generally going to be good for the environment, because fuel is such a big contributor to operating costs and greenhouse gas emissions," Wygonik said. "Saving fuel saves money, which also saves on emissions."

The research was funded by the Oregon Department of Transportation and published in the Journal of the Transportation Research Forum.

The UW researchers compiled Seattle and King County data, assuming that every household was a possible delivery-service customer. Then, they randomly drew a portion of those households from that data to identify customers and assign them to their closest grocery store. This allowed them to reach across the entire city, without bias toward factors such as demographics and income level.

They used an Environmental Protection Agency modeling tool to calculate emissions at a much more detailed level than previous studies have done. Using factors such as vehicle type, speed and roadway type, they calculated the carbon dioxide produced for every mile for every vehicle.

Emissions reductions were seen across both the densest parts and more suburban areas of Seattle. This suggests that grocery delivery in rural areas could lower carbon dioxide production quite dramatically.

"We tend to think of grocery delivery services as benefiting urban areas, but they have really significant potential to offset the environmental impacts of personal shopping in rural areas as well," Wygonik said.

Work commuters are offered a number of incentives to reduce traffic on the roads through discounted transit fares, vanpools and carpooling options. Given the emissions reductions possible through grocery delivery services, the research raises the question of whether government or industry leaders should consider incentives for consumers to order their groceries online and save on trips to the store, Goodchild said.

In the future, Goodchild and Wygonik plan to look at the influence of customers combining their grocery shopping with a work commute trip and the impact of the delivery service's home-base location on emissions.

Reality TV show 'Guntucky' puts family-run gun range on the map

Getaways

guntucky stars

CMT

The Sumner family and their gun range are the stars of CMT's new reality show, "Guntucky."

The Sumner clan is getting a national boost thanks to "Gentucky," a new reality show on CMT, but the stars of the family-run Knob Creek Gun Range has been famous among gun lovers for years.

The word started spreading in 1963 when Biff Sumner, Sr., first bought land on the edge of the woods surrounding Fort Knox Army Base about 20 miles south of Louisville, Ky., and invited a few friends over to fire off machine guns into the trees. Now, more than 16,000 people choke the gravel entrance to the property bi-annually, traveling from around the world to squeeze exotic triggers at their Machine Gun Shoot.

?Everybody likes to see something blow up,? the burly and mohawked Steven Sumner, 54, Biff Jr.'s son and the Knob Creek range supervisor, told NBC News in a phone interview this week. ?They're not into paper targets.?

tommy gun shoot

Dana McMahan for NBC News

I was terrified inside my pink pullover Under Armour jacket as I grasped the Tommy Gun under the eye of the range officer when I attended one of Knob Creek's recent shoots. Living less than an hour away, I had been curious to see what all the fuss was about.

I reluctantly put my finger on the trigger of the Tommy gun. Then I squeezed a spray of bullets down the range at some old boats and cars they use as targets.

I emptied the $40 magazine in seconds, but I was shaking with peak levels of adrenaline. I was exhilarated as I stepped away and the next person in the more than two-hour-long line, nearly all men, stepped up. Brass from the dozens of different machine guns and semi-automatics available -- like water-cooled Brownings, AK-47s, MG-42s, M-16s, belt-fed Vickers guns, Uzis, and MP5s -- piled up on the Bullitt County dirt. There was also a cannon.

Steven Sumner

CMT

Steven Sumner behind the counter at the Knob Creek gun range store.

As seen on the TV show, during regular business hours the range works hard to accommodate requests from customers who travel a mile down from Highway 44 with requests for very specific things they want to shoot up. That can include bargaining for Civil War era weapons and rigging up a zombie apocalypse shootout. They've even staged a "shotgun wedding," marrying a couple on the firing line.

?As long as it's not illegal or doesn?t interfere with the neighbors, we're up for it,? said Steven.

Still, the range has strict controls. No gun may be carried loaded. Each gun must be zip-tied and declared before entry. Steven carries a metal coin in his pocket, its silver-dollar heft a constant reminder of the importance of the word SAFETY stamped on one side. But within the confines of the scrupulously-followed rules, and under the supervision of range control officers ready to intervene in a split-second, the bullets from high-speed assault weapons fly freely. Tucked in among the edges of the Army base, local government land, and one private neighbor, nobody pays them much mind.

knob creek range

CMT

The family wouldn't discuss how much they were getting from the show but they don't plan on changing much with the earnings. Maybe expand the store a bit, and put in a double-lane bridge over the creek.

Amidst the national debate on gun control, Steven is matter-of-fact about the family business which also employs his daughter Stephanie, 22, as office manager, teenage son Payton as maintenance clerk, and his cousin Chad as sales manager. His dad owns it and his brother Kenny runs day-to-day operations.

?We're just average believers in the Second Amendment,? said Steven. ?It doesn't matter how long that gun sits in a corner, it will never kill anyone. It takes an irresponsible operator.?

Down the road in Sheperdsville is a clutch of hotels and places to eat. Lil' Biff's Motel, run by Grandpa Sumner, is nearby at 12706 Dixie Hwy, with singles for $44 and doubles for $64/night.

While you're there, consider keeping with the theme and eat at Bonnie & Clyde's pizza parlor, 7611 Dixie Hwy, cash only.

Grizzlies beat Clippers 104-83, tie series at 2

(AP) ? When Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph click together, the Memphis Grizzlies are very, very tough to beat.

Gasol and Randolph had 24 points apiece and led a strong rebounding effort by the Grizzlies in a 104-83 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday that evened their first-round playoff series at 2-all.

"Their synergy is pretty amazing you know what I mean," Clippers guard Chris Paul said. "Z Bo on the inside and big fella Marc, that's another guard the way he passes the ball and shoots the ball. You just got to run them. You got to run them. You got to try to get them tired. You can't just leave them in a rocking chair."

Gasol also contributed 13 rebounds and Randolph had nine boards as Memphis won its second straight to ensure another stop in Tennessee for Game 6. Mike Conley had 15 points and 13 assists, and Tayshaun Prince scored 15 in his best game of the series.

"Now we got to go out there and try to get a win," Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said.

Paul and Blake Griffin had 19 points apiece for the Clippers, and Griffin also grabbed 10 rebounds for his first double-double this postseason. Los Angeles' reserves outscored its counterparts again, 43-16. But DeAndre Jordan was the only other starter besides Paul and Griffin to score for the Clippers, and he had two points. Chauncey Billups and Caron Butler went a combined 0 for 10 from the floor in being shut out.

Game 5 is Tuesday night in Los Angeles.

"We got to go back, and we got to take care of business in Game 5 at home in front of our fans," Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro said. "But there's no question we're going to have to get back to playing the way we did the first couple games."

The team that controls the boards has won each game of the series so far, with Memphis owning a 45-28 advantage in Game 4. That led to a 22-2 difference in second-chance points, boosted by a 13-5 edge on offensive boards.

The Grizzlies used their prowess on the glass to beat the speedy Clippers when it came to fast-break points, 18-6.

Memphis' biggest advantage is its big men, and Randolph and Gasol each took turns helping the Grizzlies turn this into a best-of-three series. Gasol had six points at halftime, and Tony Allen said Hollins chewed out the 7-foot-1 Spaniard at the break, reminding him to score.

"The second half he was just phenomenal," Allen said.

Gasol said Hollins didn't tell him to try to score more because the center noted he had been trying to do just that in the first half.

"We had Zach going in the first half, so we played through Zach," Gasol said. "It doesn't matter who scores. At the end of the day, what matters is we win."

Randolph had 16 points and seven rebounds in the first half as Memphis got off to a quick start, leading 33-25 after the first quarter. Gasol scored 18 in the second half, using an effective jumper to avoid the paint after picking up his third foul with 7:54 left in the third. Randolph got his third 7 seconds later.

It didn't matter.

The Clippers never led by more than two, the last at 60-58 on a pair of free throws by Paul with 5:58 left in the third. Gasol then hit a 23-footer that beat the shot clock and made a pair of free throws to put Memphis ahead.

Ronny Turiaf's layup tied it for the sixth and final time. Gasol found Randolph for a layup that put the Grizzlies ahead to stay at 64-62 on the 10th and final lead change with 3:21 left in the third.

Memphis opened the fourth with a 19-5 surge and went up as much as 20, the first on a drive by Quincy Pondexter with 3:45 left at 96-76. The Grizzlies outscored the Clippers 33-16 in the quarter and 55-36 for the half.

Del Negro then subbed in from his bench with 3:02 remaining and had all his starters on the sideline for the final 2 minutes.

"They kind of blew us away in the fourth quarter," Billups said.

The Grizzlies set the tone from the start and led by as much as 12 in the first quarter. They went cold in the second when Paul scored nine of his 14 first-half points to help the Clippers to a 47-46 lead at halftime.

The Clippers wanted to be aggressive in what's been a physical series with lots of wrestling, especially between Randolph and Griffin. All the pounding appeared to take a toll in the second quarter as the Clippers had a chance to take their first lead only to have Griffin travel on back-to-back possessions. They couldn't even connect on a dunk as Prince tipped away a lob to Griffin.

Gasol was the key in the third. He even connected on a 23-foot jumper off an inbounds pass from Prince late in the shot clock. That tied it at 60 with 4:35 left and cranked new energy into the arena.

NOTES: The Grizzlies went 15-3 in the regular season when Gasol posted a double-double. ... Memphis improved to 17-1 when shooting at least 50 percent. ... The Grizzlies sold out their 12th straight postseason game. ... The Grizzlies played without veteran guard Keyon Dooling, who sat out with a strained muscle. ... Prince had only 10 points in the first three games combined. ... The Clippers shot 13 of 39 in the second half, compared to 20 for 35 for Memphis.

Business Etiquette in China | The Secrets of Negotiation with ...

Whether you are looking to open an office in China or just looking to form a partnership with a Chinese company there are several nuances that are beneficial to understand about their business etiquette. Making sure that you do your homework and comply with their traditional way of doing business will increase your success and can improve your negotiation terms with your potential Chinese partners.

Attending and Conducting Meetings

If there are two tips that you should take away from the business etiquette of meetings in China, they are regarding punctuality and figuring out who is actually in charge. Although the meetings may be a little more ritualistic in nature they follow the same format as any meeting that you are used to going to. Making sure that you check the Chinese calendar will help to make sure that you are not trying to schedule meeting around any of their national holidays, such as Chinese New Year. Spend a little extra time preparing and getting to know their business, as they have spent a great deal understanding yours. It is definitely crucial to make sure that you have an interpreter and bringing your own is the best way to ensure that you get the most balanced conversation.

Addressing others

Seniority is highly valued in China and it is important to address everyone in a business setting by their respective titles (Chairman, Director, Vice President, etc.) It is imperative to find the most senior person in the room and address them first.

Handshakes

For a business meeting or encounter there are usually a set of handshakes at the beginning of the meeting and to conclude the interaction. The key is not to be too aggressive and don?t be offended if your Chinese partners offer a weak handshake. At the end of the meeting you may also find yourself in a prolonged handshake where it is customary to keep the contact for a while longer than you are probably used to.

Giving/Receiving business cards

Similar to the introductions you want to make sure that you hand your business card to the most senior official first. It is also customary to offer your cards with both hands as if you were presenting a gift. If you can, have your title translated into Chinese, as this will be how your hosts decide who should be invited to which event and where you will be seated.

PA Residents' Oinions and Attitudes Toward Deer ... - Ammoland.com

New study shows deer are valued by all Pennsylvanians, including hunters and non-hunters.

Pennsylvania Whitetail Deer

Responsive Management

Responsive Management

Harrisonburg, VA ??-(Ammoland.com)- ?A recent study conducted by Responsive Management for the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) found very positive attitudes toward deer and deer-related recreation.

A large majority of Pennsylvania residents (77%) enjoy having deer around, although a portion of those may worry about the problems deer cause; only 6% regard deer as a nuisance.

More than half of Pennsylvanians (56%) had spent time viewing or watching deer around their home in the previous 12 months, while 22% had taken a trip of at least 1 mile to view deer during that same time period. Finally, a large majority of Pennsylvania residents (85%) support legal, regulated hunting of deer.

The PGC is using the results of this study to help fulfill its mission to manage wildlife populations for all residents and visitors.

?This study was important because it didn?t just look at hunters but at the residents of the Commonwealth as a whole, and it let us know what they think,? said Coren Jagnow, Chief Human Dimensions Specialist, PGC Research and Education Division.

The study measured public opinions on?deer management efforts and goals, methods for managing deer, the size and health of the deer herd, concerns about deer and deer nuisance problems, and participation in viewing, feeding, and hunting deer, as well as the best way to provide information on deer.

Methodology
Responsive Management obtained a total of 9,212 completed interviews by telephone with Pennsylvania residents 18 years old and older, with at least 400 completed interviews in each PGC Wildlife Management Unit (WMU). The results are representative of Pennsylvania residents statewide, with a sampling error of +/- 1.02 percentage points, and representative for each of the 22 WMUs. Because the WMU boundaries cross county lines and zip code boundary lines, Geographic Information System (GIS) technology was utilized to properly categorize each sample telephone number into its proper WMU for both landlines and cell phones.

Opinions on Deer Management Efforts and Goals
A large majority of residents agree with each of the three deer management goals that were asked about in the survey: 91% agree with managing for healthy and sustainable deer populations, 89% agree with managing the deer for a healthy and sustainable forest habitat, and 84% agree with managing for safe, acceptable levels of deer-human conflicts. The ecological goals are both slightly higher than the human-centered goal.

Participation in Deer-Related Activities and Feeding Deer
As mentioned previously, 56% of Pennsylvania residents have spent time viewing or watching deer around home and 22% have taken a trip to view deer. However, only 8% have fed deer or put out attractants.

?We are encouraged by a lot of the results, such as high levels of support for deer hunting and satisfaction with the size of the deer herd.??~ Coren Jagnow, Chief Human Dimensions Specialist, PGC Research and Education Division

Opinions on Deer In General and the Size of the Deer Herd
In general, Pennsylvania residents? feelings about deer are positive: 77% of Pennsylvania residents statewide enjoy having deer around (49% gave this response without caveats and another 28% say they like having deer around even though they worry about the problems that the deer may cause). Furthermore, slightly more than half of residents (54%) say the deer population in their area is just right; otherwise, opinions are split on whether the population is too high or too low.

PA Deer Size

?Our decision-making for whether to adjust deer populations or keep them the same concerns three areas: the health of the forest, the health of the deer herd, and the social aspect, meaning what the residents in a particular WMU want. We knew it was important to have a representative sample in each of the Wildlife Management Units.? ~ Coren Jagnow, Chief Human Dimensions Specialist, PGC Research and Education Division

Deer-related issues are not necessarily a top priority among residents: when asked to compare the importance of deer-related issues to other issues in their lives, the average rating was a 4.09 on a 10-point scale, with 0 representing ?not at all important? and 10 being ?extremely important.?

Respondents were also asked to rate their concern regarding seven specific issues associated with deer. For each issue, respondents rated their level of concern using a 10-point scale, with 10 being the most concerned. The most concern was for tick-borne diseases (mean rating of 7.4) and deer-vehicle accidents (7.0), followed by two more whose means are just under those top two: the health of the deer population and the quality of deer habitat. At the bottom are concern about deer impacts on habitat and other wildlife (3.9) and the two impacts to residents? landscaping: deer damage to plants and landscaping (2.5) and deer droppings in the yard (1.7).

PA Deer Issues

Opinions on Methods for Managing Deer
Just under two-thirds of Pennsylvania residents (63%) support lethal methods to manage deer populations in Pennsylvania (38% strongly support, and 25% moderately support); nonetheless, 29% oppose (20% strongly oppose, and 9% moderately oppose).

The survey asked about four methods of controlling deer populations (three of them lethal). The most support is for legal, regulated hunting (85% of respondents support this method, while 12% oppose), distantly followed by fertility/birth control (46% support, 45% oppose), professionals or sharpshooters (39% support, 54% oppose), and trapping and killing (24% support, 72% oppose).

PA Deer Methods
The full report for the Pennsylvania deer study, including discussion of the survey results statewide and by WMU, nonparametric analyses, and crosstabulated survey responses, can be accessed here.

Roundworm quells obesity and related metabolic disorders

Friday, April 26, 2013

Researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, have shown in a mouse model that infection with nematodes (also known as roundworms) can not only combat obesity but ameliorate related metabolic disorders. Their research is published ahead of print online in the journal Infection and Immunity.

Gastrointestinal nematodes infect approximately 2 billion people worldwide, and some researchers believe up until the 20th century almost everyone had worms. In developed countries there is a decreasing incidence of nematode infection but a rising prevalence of certain types of autoimmunity, suggesting a relationship between the two. Nematode infection has been purported to have therapeutic effects and currently clinical trials are underway to examine worms as a treatment for diseases associated with the relevant cytokines, including inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis, and allergies.

In the study researchers tested the effect of nematode infection on mice fed a high-fat diet. Infected mice of normal girth gained 15 percent less weight than those that were not infected. Mice that were already obese when infected lost roughly 13 percent of their body weight within 10 days. Infection also drastically lowered fasting blood glucose, a risk factor for diabetes, and reduced fatty liver disease, decreasing liver fat by ~25 percent, and the weight of the liver by 30 percent.

The levels of insulin and leptin also dropped, "indicating that the mice restored their sensitivities to both hormones," says corresponding author Aiping Zhao of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore. Leptin moderates appetite. As with too much insulin, too high a level of leptin results in insensitivity, thus contributing to obesity and metabolic syndrome, Zhao explains.

The mechanism of the moderation of these hormones "was associated with a parasite-induced reduction in glucose absorption in the intestine, reduced liver triglycerides, and an increase in the population of cells called "alternatively activated macrophages," which regulate glucose metabolism and inflammation," says coauthor Joe Urban of the United States Department of Agriculture. Some of these changes involved "a protein called interleukin-13 and related intracellular signaling mechanisms," he says. "This suggests that there are immune related shifts in metabolism that can alter expression of obesity and related metabolic syndrome."

The incidence of obesity has been climbing dramatically, worldwide. It is a key risk factor for many metabolic diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. Recent studies indicate that it is accompanied by chronic low-grade inflammation in adipose tissues, causing the release of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines that contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome.

Parasitic nematode infection induces a marked elevation in host immune Th2-cells and related type 2 cytokines which, besides combating the infection, also have potent anti-inflammatory activity, according to the report.

Mississippi man linked to ricin letters charged with biological weapons use

By Robbie Ward

TUPELO, Mississippi (Reuters) - A Mississippi martial arts instructor was charged on Saturday with attempting to use a biological weapon after a ricin-laced letter was sent to President Barack Obama earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Justice said.

Everett Dutschke, 41, was arrested at his Tupelo home shortly after midnight by FBI agents following searches of the residence and a former business as part of the ricin letter investigation.

He was later charged with "developing ... and possessing" ricin and "attempting" to use it "as a weapon," according to a joint statement by the U.S. attorney for the northern district of Mississippi and the head of the FBI's Mississippi office.

Ricin is a highly lethal poison made from castor beans.

If convicted, Dutschke faces maximum possible penalties of life imprisonment and a $250,000 fine.

His arrest came several days after U.S. prosecutors dropped charges in the case on Tuesday against another Mississippi man, Kevin Curtis, who was released from jail after a search of his home revealed no incriminating evidence.

Dutschke's name first surfaced when Curtis' attorney suggested in a court hearing that her client had been framed by someone, and mentioned a running feud between Dutschke and Curtis.

Saturday's announcement did not specify if Dutschke was being charged in relation to the ricin letters, but it noted that the investigation had been conducted by several federal agencies including the U. S. Postal Inspection Service and U.S. Capitol Police.

Dutschke's attorney, Lori Basham, did not return calls seeking comment, but she told Reuters earlier in the week that her client denied having anything to do with the ricin letters.

Dutschke is expected to appear in U.S. District Court in Oxford, Mississippi, on Monday.

Federal agents initially targeted Curtis, an Elvis impersonator, in their efforts to find who sent the letters laced with ricin.

Letters addressed to Obama and Senator Roger Wicker, a Mississippi Republican, were retrieved last week at off-site mail facilities before reaching their intended victims. A Mississippi state judge also received a ricin-laced letter.

Discovery of the letters fueled more national anxiety in the days after the bombing at the Boston Marathon.

The case also brought extra scrutiny for the FBI almost 12 years after a 2001 letter-borne anthrax attack that killed five people and puzzled investigators for years. The anthrax investigation came in the wake of the September 11, 2001, hijacked plane attacks on the United States.

Federal agents in unmarked vehicles were stationed in streets surrounding Dutschke's home on Friday afternoon and all evening.

Agents from the FBI and members of an anti-terrorist response team from the Mississippi National Guard, some wearing hazardous material suits, had searched the home on Tuesday and Wednesday, as well as the premises of a former martial arts studio Dutschke ran in the city.

Dutschke was cooperating with federal officials during the searches this week, his attorney said.

'MISSING PIECES'

Suspicion had originally fallen on Curtis because of wording contained in all three ricin letters, which included his initials "KC."

Dutschke has told local media that he knew Curtis but had only had contact with him three times, and not since 2010.

Curtis, 45, told the Northeastern Mississippi Daily Journal that he believed Dutschke deliberately sabotaged his career as a performer by calling sponsors and telling them about Curtis' numerous prior arrests. "I lost 12 really big shows in 2011 and eight in 2012 directly linked to him," Curtis told the newspaper.

Dutschke, who fronted a two-man blues band in Tupelo called RoboDrum, ran unsuccessfully as a Republican candidate in 2007 against Stephen Holland, a Democratic state representative from the Tupelo area. Holland's mother, Sadie, is the judge to whom one of the ricin-tainted letters was mailed this month.

Curtis's brother and fellow Elvis impersonator, insurance agent Jack Curtis, worked for a time with Dutschke and said he believed the feud with Dutschke was related to his brother's efforts to publicize allegations about a black market for body parts at a local Mississippi hospital.

Kevin Curtis was fired as a janitor from North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo after raising questions about body parts he said he observed there. The hospital strongly denied the allegations.

Dutschke faces other charges related to an April 1 indictment for fondling three children between ages 7 and 16, from 2007 to 2013, according to court records.

RICIN POTENCY

The FBI said on Thursday that more tests may be necessary to determine the potency of a granular material identified as ricin contained in the letters.

An FBI agent testified in court in Mississippi that the ricin found in the letters was in a crude form and looked like castor beans ground up in a blender, according to media accounts. Experts have said ricin in that form would have a low potency.

Castor bean plants are grown as ornamental shrubs in the Southern United States, but there is no domestic castor oil production and it is mostly imported from India and China.

Milton Leitenberg, senior research scholar at the Center for Strategic and International Studies at the University of Maryland, said the vast majority of ricin cases since the 1960s had involved crude ricin preparations made from recipes published in manuals and on the Internet.

"You could ingest this crude stuff, swallow a couple of tablespoons and you'd probably vomit, but not much more," Leitenberg said in a telephone interview.

A material like that described in the ricin court hearing would pose little danger, Leitenberg said.

Jaguars release new uniforms: best and worst new designs in the NFL

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Brian Hartline tries to break the tackle of Colts cornerback Cassius Vaughn during the first half of a football game last season in Indianapolis. Leaked photos of the new Dolphins uniforms have a new logo, and less orange. The Dolphins will unveil their new look officially on Thursday, one of three teams to do so: The Jacksonville Jaguars' new uniforms were released Thursday, and the Minnesota Vikings will premiere a new look Thursday along with the Dolphins. (Darron Cummings/AP/File)

Unlike, say, the Jacksonville Jaguars' new uniforms, the 'Fins look wasn't changed much. But that didn't prevent a huge misstep: getting rid of one of the league's best logos. The old logo, of a peevish cartoon dolphin wearing a football helmet, was perfectly fun and on message: it said, "We are the Dolphins, we play tough football, and you will have a blast watching us."?

The new logo says, "We saw some tasteful dolphin-print?wallpaper in our dentist's waiting room and thought it would look nice on our helmets."?

The Dolphins? brass claims the new logo is better representative of a dolphin in the wild than the old one.?

Otherwise, the new uniforms are just a slight update of the old ones: the aqua and white color scheme remains intact, and orange, which was the Dolphins? dominant color a few decades ago, is further de-emphasized. They aren't ugly; the colors go well together and are a good visual representation of South Florida. But there's no menacing edge to these uniforms. A print dress or a room done in Miami Dolphins colors would be perfectly tasteful, and that probably isn't a good sign.?

The redesigns are part of a five-year licensing?deal with Nike, launched in April of last year. Before that, the NFL contract had been held by the Adidas-owned Reebok brand for the better part of a decade. During the launch last year, some estimated that the new deal would bring about $500 million in extra revenue to the league .

The NFL hasn?t revealed exactly how much it made in merchandise sales in 2012, but the league isn?t wanting for cash flow. The NFL made $9.5 billion last year, by far the most of any US sports league. (Major League Baseball came in second, with $7.5 billion).

Like most sports leagues, the bulk of the NFL?s money comes from TV contracts, but the merchandising doesn?t hurt. Last year, the San Francisco 49ers sold the most team gear. Then-rookie Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III had the best-selling individual jersey, and broke the record for most jerseys sold in a single season.

Astronomers discover the Ed Begley Jr. of galaxies

An international team of researchers have spotted the most fuel-efficient galaxy yet, which converts nearly 100 percent of its hydrogen gas into stars.

By Eoin O'Carroll,?Staff / April 24, 2013

The tiny red spot in this image is one of the most efficient star-making galaxies ever observed, converting gas into stars at the maximum possible rate. Visible-light observations from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope (inset) reveal that the starlight in this galaxy is extraordinarily compact, with most of the light emitted by a region just a fraction of the size of the Milky Way galaxy.

Six billion or so light years from here, there's a galaxy that seems to take seriously the old Lakota maxim about using the whole buffalo.

Except by "use" we mean "form stars out of" and by "buffalo" we mean "interstellar hydrogen gas."?

Hydrogen gas is the fuel that galaxies use to make new stars, and most galaxies are the equivalent of a Hummer with a broken oxygen sensor, four flat tires, and a buffalo carcass strapped to the roof. Most of the gas meant to transport you gets wasted. But a new study has spotted a galaxy that is converting gas into stars at a rate hundreds of times that of our galaxy with almost 100 percent efficiency.

An international team of scientists looked at data from?NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) and spotted a galaxy that was just blazing with infrared radiation, equivalent, they say, to a trillion suns. Observations from the Hubble telescope confirmed that the galaxy, which is affectionately known as?SDSSJ1506+54, is extremely compact, with most of the infrared light pouring from an area that is a fraction of the size of our own Milky Way.?

The researchers then used data from the IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer in the French Alps to detect the presence of carbon monoxide, which indicates the presence of hydrogen. By combining the gas measurements with the rate of star formation, the scientists found that the galaxy was forming stars out of the gas at a rate that is close to the theoretical maximum. Their paper, which has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Astrophysical Letters, calls it "star formation at its most extreme."

A NASA press release explains just how this galaxy is achieving such efficiency:

In regions of galaxies where new stars are forming, parts of gas clouds are collapsing due to gravity. When the gas is dense enough to squeeze atoms together and ignite nuclear fusion, a star is born. But this process can be halted by other newborn stars, as their winds and radiation blow the gas outward. The point at which this occurs sets the theoretical maximum for star formation. The galaxy SDSSJ1506+54 was found to be making stars right at this point, just before the gas clouds would otherwise be blown apart.

"We see some gas outflowing from this galaxy at millions of miles per hour, and this gas may have been blown away by the powerful radiation from the newly formed stars," said Ryan Hickox, an astrophysicist at Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H., and a co-author on the study.

Why is this galaxy so efficient at converting hydrogen into stars while all the others are such slouches? It actually comes down to timing. We just happen to be witnessing the time period, six billion years ago, when this galaxy produces lots of stars. The researchers speculate that this period could have been triggered by the merging of two galaxies into one.?

In any case, it's a bright spot in our sky. As Discovery News's Ian O'Neill points out those living on a planet on the outskirts of this prolific star factory will have a "night" sky that is actually brighter than daylight.

Tips For Become A Good Host Of Bed And Breakfast Inns ? Hot ...

A lot of people have traveling as their main hobby. The beauty of traveling to a place with lots of wonderful things to offer is appealing. There is no one who would turn down an opportunity to go to a place where they can have fun and enjoy a vacation. That is why it is important to become a good host for an Ann Arbor bed and breakfast.

To become a good host, there are various things that the owner should consider. Here are some of the tips that might be of great importance to him. Of course, these tips will surely help the owner create a good impression to leave the guest with.

First, it will be a good idea if he can leave a few notecards in the room. These notecards should contain information related to the food service within the area, most appropriately of the pizza delivery services. This is because most people would want to order pizza on the latter days for their stay.

It is also important that staff members should be accommodating to each guest. It is a must that they know how they should be able to accommodate to the needs of their clients. This means to say that the owner and his staff should clearly show their intent to give proper service to the guests. Be prepared in case they will need more pillows, towels, or blankets.

It is also up to the host to consider whether it is all right to put up a collection of the recipes that they might be able to share with the guests. These recipes are oftentimes considered to be one of the highlights of staying within the said housing facility. The host will be the one to decide if it will come with a fee or not.

There might also be those guests who have the same hobbies as the owner. If this is the case, the host can also show the guests how things are being done around there. He can ask the guests to come visit his workshop. Such hobbies that he can get the guests to visit are glass making, pottery making, weaving, or quilt making.

It will also benefit him a lot if he can showcase the historical value of his inn. This is especially applicable to those inns that have a long share of history with them. The guests may want to know more about the inn so it will surely help if he has a scrap book that they can refer to.

There is also the need for the host to provide the guests with the list of the churches within the area. If possible, he should also include the times for the worship service. Of course, he has to make sure that the list is updated as to avoid embarrassing the guest.

There is the need for space and privacy even with guests. The guests, even if they are not staying in their own place, should be at ease. The Ann Arbor bed and breakfast inn should be a place that they can consider their second home.

When a weekend getaway is desired, locals may check out Ann Arbor Bed and Breakfast at www.a2vitosha.com to book a reservation. You will learn about their rates, amenities, and attractions when you click the links at http://www.a2vitosha.com today.

Study finds that residential lawns efflux more carbon dioxide than corn fields

Wednesday, April 24, 2013

More carbon dioxide is released from residential lawns than corn fields according to a new study. And much of the difference can likely be attributed to soil temperature. The data, from researchers at Elizabethtown College, suggest that urban heat islands may be working at smaller scales than previously thought.

These findings provide a better understanding of the changes that occur when agricultural lands undergo development and urbanization to support growing urban populations.

David Bowne, assistant professor of biology, led the study to look at the amount of carbon dioxide being released from residential lawns versus corn fields in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. His co-author, Erin Johnson, was an undergraduate at the time of the study and did the work as part of her senior honors thesis. Their findings were published online today in Soil Science Society of America Journal.

For Bowne, the study allowed him to look beyond the obvious impact of losing agricultural fields to development ? the loss of food that was once produced on the land.

"That is a legitimate concern, but I wanted to look more at how this change could potentially impact the carbon cycle with the understanding that the carbon cycle has implications for global climate change," explains Bowne.

To begin to understand how the carbon cycle was changing, Bowne and Johnson measured carbon dioxide efflux, soil temperature, and soil moisture under the two different land uses. They found that both carbon dioxide efflux and soil temperature were higher in residential lawns than in corn fields. Additionally, temperature had the most influence on the levels of carbon dioxide efflux, followed by the type of land use.

Higher temperatures leading to increased carbon dioxide efflux was not a surprise for Bowne and Johnson as this relationship has been documented before. "As you increase temperature," Bowne explains, "you increase biological activity ? be it microbial, plant, fungal, or animal." That increased activity, then, leads to more respiration and higher levels of carbon dioxide leaving the soils.

What was unexpected, however, was that the higher temperatures found in residential lawns suggested urban heat islands working at small scales. Urban heat islands are well documented phenomena in which development leads to large areas of dark-colored surfaces such as roofs, buildings, and parking lots. The dark color means more heat is absorbed leading to an increase in temperature in the neighboring areas. Urban areas, then, are warmer than the surrounding countryside.

The interesting part of Bowne's study is that the urban heat islands in the areas he was looking seem to operate on much smaller scales than he previously thought. While heat islands are usually studied on large scales ? such as comparing a large city and its surrounding rural areas ? fewer studies have been done to work out how development may affect temperatures on small scales.

"Within a developed area, within a city or town, you could have local increases in soil temperature because of the amount of development within a really small area," says Bowne.

His research suggests that temperatures may vary even across short distances due to the influence of development. One source cited in his paper says that development within even 175 meters of a location can cause an increase in temperature. Bowne is planning further experiments to test soil temperatures over a range of development setups and sizes.

The other factor that Bowne will test in the future is the sequestration of carbon. Along with the carbon dioxide efflux data in the current study, information about carbon sequestration would give a bigger picture of carbon cycling. That picture could then help researchers determine how various land uses as well as management practices such as no-till agriculture or leaving grass clippings on lawns can change the carbon cycling.

"If we go from one land use to another land use, how does that impact carbon cycling which in turn can affect climate change? Our current study touches on one component of that cycle, and more research is needed to address this huge topic," says Bowne.

Where Will the Next Big Earthquakes Occur?

SALT LAKE CITY ? The world's largest earthquakes are also the rarest ones, making it hard to predict these terrible temblors.

So seismologists are developing new ways to forecast the biggest earthquakes, like the massive, deadly magnitude-9 and greater quakes that have occurred in Japan, Sumatra, Chile and Alaska.

"There's an agreement that the prediction of individual earthquakes is not possible and probably will not be possible," said Gert Z?ller, a mathematician at the University of Potsdam in Germany." The goal of our work is to [instead] make some statements about hazard: Here we have a region that is more dangerous, and here we have a region that is less dangerous."

Using a technique called probabilistic modeling, Z?ller and his colleagues predicted that Japan's next giant earthquake is more likely to strike the island's northern regions, he reported April 19 at the Seismological Society of America's annual meeting.

Rather than relying on one data source, such as the historical record of earthquakes, probabilistic models incorporate many different kinds and sources of earthquake data.

"We try to collect many pieces of information and put this information in a mathematical framework to estimate probability," Z?ller told OurAmazingPlanet.

Z?ller reviewed earthquake data back to the year 684 and seismometer records dating back to 1923. From analyzing that data, he was able to determine the probability of an earthquake greater than magnitude 8 occurring along Japan's subduction zone in the next 30 years. A subduction zone is where two of Earth's tectonic plates collide and one slides beneath the other.

In the Tohoku region of Japan, where 2011's massive earthquake ruptured, and northward, there is a relatively high probability of strong earthquakes. To the south, such as off the coast of the Tokai Nankai region, there is a relatively low probability of high-magnitude earthquakes, the researchers found.

The findings reverse the predictions of Japan's national seismic hazard map, which places the country's greatest earthquake hazard in the South. "Many people are claiming the next earthquake will be in the Tokai region, [but] our results say the northern part has higher probabilities for large earthquakes," Z?ller said.

Part of this discrepancy could be due to the time scales used in the models, Z?ller said. For instance, the map incorporates ground-shaking and includes short-term time scales, while Z?ller's forecast is time-independent, he said.

But a separate, short-term study supports Z?ller's conclusions. A forecast presented at the meeting April 19 by John Rundle of the University of California, Davis, estimated that Sendai and Tokyo ? located in northern and central Japan, respectively ? have the highest probability of a magnitude-7 earthquake occurring within one year. Kyoto has the lowest probability, which is consistent with Z?ller's report, Rundle said.

Study: chicken, ground beef are riskiest meats

WASHINGTON (AP) ? An analysis of more than 33,000 cases of foodborne illness shows that ground beef and chicken have caused more hospitalizations than other meats.

The report by the Center for Science in Public Interest says chicken nuggets, ham and sausage pose the lowest risk of foodborne illness.

The group used government data on 1,700 incidents over 12 years to analyze outbreaks of salmonella, E. coli, listeria and other pathogens that were definitively linked to a certain meat.

To calculate which meats were riskiest, CSPI ranked the foods in which contamination was most likely to cause hospitalizations. Some meats may have had more illnesses but were less likely to cause severe illness.

Bieber surrenders monkey to German shelter

AP, Reuters

By Lily Harrison and Senta Scarborough, E! Online

Mallygate is nearing an end, it seems! Justin Bieber is allowing his pet Capuchin monkey Mally to go to a new home, per the Munich animal shelter that has housed Mally since his confiscation in March.

Roberto Mioni Coltro, a spokesperson for Munich Tierschutzverein, tells E! News: "Justin Bieber's management contacted us and they will give up Mally."

PHOTOS: See the cutest pics of Justin Bieber's pet monkey Mally!

"They are asking us for a good home for Mally," Coltro tells E! News exclusively, adding that the authorities still need an official document from Justin's manager rather than just an email.

The ultimate decision about Mally's future home, however, is up to the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation rather than the shelter. Coltro explained, "We only can make a recommendation and we don't want to send Mally in the zoo, because?the zoos will only [publicize] Mally... We (Tierschutzverein) want Mally in a rescue center or some organization for primates."

Nevertheless, Coltro assures us, the baby monkey will not have to part with his constant stuffed animal companion: "Mally will take the 'stuffed cat' with him!"

NEWS: PETA and German shelter give update on Mally's care

Bieber first ran into trouble when he arrived via private plane at the Franz Josef Strauss Airport in Munich airport on March 28 for a concert and was confronted about the monkey in customs. Mally was taken into custody after the "Boyfriend" singer was unable to provide necessary paperwork for the pet and was subsequently detained by German officials.

Bieber was reportedly charged a fine and the cost of the quarantine as a result of the incident.

We hope Mally finds a good new home!
