The Present Order to permit Property finance loan Advertise Spelled ...

What's promising pertaining to property owners is the fact that UK buy-to-let reverse mortgage daily sector is essentially the most reasonably competitive and also inventive on the planet which results in about many numerous buy-to-let home loan products out there for a single period. The quantities have yet recently been decrease recently while buy-to-let banks have addressed the loan crunch as a result of reigning during the more risky buy-to-let reverse mortgage pros and consproducts. Another not so good pertaining to buy-to-let credit seekers is that often buy-to-let banks have in addition repriced chance quality while in the expenses these buy-to-let lending products. Consequently this perimeter loan companies & buy-to-let banks impose in the Loan provider for The united kingdom foundation level provides escalated as a result of concerning zero.25%-0.5% and even unique buy-to-let banks shrinking his or her lender factors. Concurrently the item costs costed as a result of a good number of buy-to-let banks have in addition escalated.

The bad news is basically some sort of purpose of the great news. That is the fact that the substantial range of products means that another possibility is possibly property owners so you can get mixed up. In addition to just about a hundred firms for buy-to-let mortgage loans there is additionally a wide variety of numerous method of buy-to-let home loan products.Whatever buy-to-let home loan supplement that is suitable available for you as being a property manager will considerably be determined by some sort of landlord's individual economical occasions and also a landlord's mind-set to help you hazard.Landlords who're troubled that when interest rates have to escalate, their buy-to-let bills may be too expensive may want to consider a constant level buy-to-let home loan products. This kind of buy-to-let home loan can give some sort of property manager this certainty on the distinct house payment month after month throughout this preset expression no matter what occurs to interest rates.

Your property manager who actually could possibly be presented with a shorter expression difficulty; conceivably in which a varying buy-to-let mortgage payments can be over a property owners rental revenue may want to consider a discounted buy-to-let home loan products. Like this some sort of property manager helps make under common buy-to-let mortgage repayments even while his or her rental revenue increases or perhaps the general interest declines. Even so, some sort of property manager ought to be cautious about this method. For the reason that whenever interest rates escalate further or maybe a property manager looks over the belief that his or her reverse mortgage loan level and for that reason his or her cash flow is simply on the brief ground this ending from the discount level would likely lead to him or her all the more economical hard knocks.

Latch On NYC Breastfeeding Campaign (credit: NYC Health Dept.)

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Mayor Michael Bloomberg has banned smoking in New York City parks and is trying to ban the sale of sugary drinks over 16 oz. But he already has his sights on his next target: baby formula.

WCBS 880?s Alex Silverman On The Story

Latch On NYC is a citywide initiative to support mothers who choose to breastfeed and limit practices that interfere with that choice.

It begins September 3, but ads are already on the subways.

LINK: Latch On NYC (Health Dept. Site)

The mayor said Monday that all the big public health people agree with him.

He said they say it?s a great idea because breast milk is just better.

?The immunities that a mother has built up get passed on to the child,? he told reporters.

Hospitals choosing to be part of the city program will keep formula bottles hidden and carefully controlled to encourage breastfeeding.

?We?re not making anybody do it. We?re suggesting, and the same thing with full sugar drinks,? the mayor said. ?I was behind a truck this morning, and they said ?Don?t limit our drinks.? Nobody?s limiting. It?s just the size of the cup.?

Mothers will still be allowed to have formula, but will have to request it, won?t get it for free, and hospital staff will have to sign it out.

The National Alliance for Breastfeeding Advocacy has come out in support of the mayor?s plan, and hopes to get more hospitals on board.

From smoking to soda to baby formula? one reporter wanted to know what?s next.

?Anything that we can think of that will improve your health,? he said.

Where do you stand on the mayor?s initiative? Sound off in the comments section below.

Blog Archive ? The Hardware to Software Technology Shift

When the iPhone hit the market five years ago one of the major shifts in mobile phones evolution took place: the shift from hardware to software. The iPhone was a software platform. Companies like Nokia, RIM and many other ruled in the hardware era of the mobile industry but with the shift to software companies like Apple and Google became the leaders leaving Nokia and RIM fighting for their?existence.?This shift is not unique to mobile phones. We will see more industries get disrupted because of the hardware becomes commoditized?and the software takes over the innovation.

Computers also went though this shift. The first signs of the shift was with Windows 95, the first operating system for the consumer. It was a huge improvement in the evolution of operating systems, and opened the world of computers and the internet to the masses. Still, computing was some work. The final shift was with the tablet when the software became the key element with the multi-touch. Even the notion of a disk drive is gone. People that use tablet don?t even think they are using a computer.

We usually regard products as hardware because we can see them and touch them. And products such as computer, tablets and smartphones are all about hardware. That won?t change. The change is that the dominant innovation is software. The hardware becomes a sustaining innovation while the software creates the growth innovation. The iPhone and the iPad are typical example of growth disruptions.

Among industries that still have to go through?this shift, is for example the TV?industry. We are seeing early stages of?TV as a software platform. The car is another example, increasingly controlled by software, and?eventually?a software?platform?with apps. Home appliances can also be programmed using software. Many ovens have built-in cooking programs. What if you can download new programs that come with?recipes?and install into the oven. The biggest?disruption?will likely be in?manufacturing. Designers and engineers have used CAD software for year to print out 3D objects. With 3D printing in the hands of the general consumer, even?customised, a huge disruption will take place.

The reason that software is so powerful is that is so adaptable. We saw this with the general computers that disrupted the calculators and all the adding machines. You can install any software and change the machine. For the smartphones today you can, with few clicks, add apps with new functionality. Software can be changed and it can be distributed instantly. Industries that face this disruption are suddenly in the position that part of their workforce has the wrong skill set. Indeed, Nokia and RIM have gone through huge layoffs.

This shift is not only a challenge to companies, but also to the education system. With more emphasis on software we need more technical workers with programming skills. The programmers of the future will be programming hardware we don?t even have today. Think about all the iPhone developers today ? those jobs did not exist 5 years ago when many of the developers were in school learning to program.

For those that follow technology trends and try to spot new disrupting technologies and?opportunities?should add the software technology shift to the list of things to look for. There are many disruptions ahead.

5 tips to avoid social media blunders ? Business Management ...

by Kimberly Deas

As social media?s popularity grows, so do the blunders. Take for example, Ragu?s Twitter marketing campaign in assuming that women do the cooking, or Net??flix?s disastrous mistake in not claiming the Twit??ter handle for their new brand, Qwikster.? ?

One wrong move and you might find yourself in hot water with your online community. To prevent blunders, use the following 5 tips:

1. Listen to your community. Deleting comments on Facebook has been seen as a ?sin? in social media. Instead of deleting, respond with a thoughtful and considerate answer.

2. Time your communication. Review what is happening within your company before launching a campaign. Is the timing right or will this add fuel to an already burning fire?

3. Stop guessing, start asking.? Many companies have learned the hard way that their customers do not like their new programs, evidenced by on??line complaints fueled by social media. Instead of guessing whether your new program/product will be approved, just ask. Social media allows you to connect with your audience.

4. Acknowledge your mistakes. Mistakes will happen. Just apologize and acknowledge your mistake to avoid a flurry of social media slams. Avoiding discussing the mistake might be the worst mistake of all.

5. Be sensitive.? Our communities are real people with feelings. Telling jokes about tsunamis or shooting elephants may create outrage in your community and damage your brand. Remember, social media is about talking with real people.

Vos the boss in women's Olympics road race

Dutch cycling sensation Marianna Vos finally added Olympic road race gold to her impressive collection of titles after dominating Britain's Lizzie Armitstead in a two-up sprint on Saturday.

Armitstead finished second at over a bike length behind to take the silver with Olga Zabelinskaya of Russia winning the bronze after 140 km of road racing.

Vos, the Olympic champion in the track points in Beijing, came into the race having won five stages of the women's Giro d'Italia as well as the event's overall title.

And she proved that form had not deserted her with a powerful sprint inside the final 200 metres that Armitstead simply could not match.

Defending Olympic champion Nicole Cooke of Britain finished with the main chasing peloton less than 30sec behind the leading trio, who came into the capital on their own to contest the medals.

With the pressure on Britain to claim a medal after the men's road race whitewash on Saturday, the British women made sure there would be no repeat with both Emma Pooley and Armitstead among the main protagonists.

After a series of attacks and counter attacks by climbing specialist Pooley on the Box Hill circuit, Armitstead did well to follow Vos when the Dutchwoman counter-attacked Zabelinskaya with 45 km to go.

American Shelley Olds joined the trio and together the four leaders soon went on to build a lead of 30sec on the peloton over the next 15 km.

Germany, Italy and Sweden were among the big teams not represented in the attack and were left in a desperate chase that was made even more difficult when the rain that had marred the start of the race came on again.

The leaders' bid to stay away suffered a minor blow when Olds dropped out after appearing to suffer a puncture. Almost simultaneously, Swede Emma Johansson suffered the same setback in the chasing peloton.

Vos, Armitstead and Zabelinskaya were not to be outdone, however.

Despite the Americans and Italians moving to the front of the chasing bunch in a bid to help close the gap, the leaders' continued collaboration gave them a lead bordering on 45secs with 18 km remaining.

In the end, it proved enough to secure them the medals.

Brief History Of Golf

The game of golf has been around for hundreds of years. The true origins of golf are unclear; however, it may have started in Holland in the late 1200s. There seems to be references to similar games throughout history and in many different countries. The game was played in Scotland as early as 1457, when King James II decreed it was forbidden so they could concentrate on defeating their enemies. Golf continued to grow in popularity.

By 1744 golfers at St. Andrews in Scotland formed one of the first known golf clubs, which is still in existence today. The first instruction book for golf was written in 1867. In the late 17th century, golf began in colonial America. It started to catch on slowly. By the end of the 19th century there were over 1,000 golf courses in the United States. The Japanese took up golf as well in the early 1900's. The game is popular among all age groups and is now played by both men and women. The first golf games were played with wooden balls, which did not work too well. This soon progressed to feather golf balls.

The balls were stitched leather stuffed with feathers. They were more expensive than golf clubs at the time. The balls were lightweight and didn't fly very far. They were also difficult to play with in poor weather conditions, as they would get soggy and waterlogged. Eventually, gutta percha, the dried gum from a Malaysian tree sap was used to form a hard, solid ball. These gutties as they were nicknamed helped to bring golf to more people because these balls were much more affordable. They also performed much better than the feather balls of the past. Eventually the guttie was replaced by the modern golf ball as we know it today.

Clubs also went through many changes throughout the years. They started out as very primitive sticks fashioned with larger wooden ends for hitting the ball. These became the woods as we now know them. People found that by using metal on the end of the stick they could hit the ball better and thus irons were invented. More and more play with irons become popular because the ball was easy to hit with the iron club. Eventually, metal replaced the wooden shafts on golf clubs and they became more as they are today.

Early golf was played more for fun and socializing than for scorekeeping. All that changed in the 20th century. As golf became more sophisticated, early golf stars began to emerge. But it was television that helped to make golf the important sport it is today. The first televised golf match was the U.S. Open in St. Louis in 1947.

From then on, televised golf tournaments became more and more popular. The game grew immensely thanks to golf stars and televised tournaments. Professional golf became a legitimate sport and with it came commercialization. Today there are hundreds of companies that manufacture golf clubs and equipment. There are thousands of golf courses and many golf resorts and country clubs. The game is now played by millions and watched on television by even more. There is even a whole television channel dedicated to nothing but golf. The game is more popular than ever and doesn't seem to be slowing down.

Blogging the Human Genome

In the middle of chromosome 10 sits the ercc6 gene, which plays various roles in basic cell processes like DNA repair. When ercc6 fails, you get Cockayne syndrome, which leads to a stunted frame, accelerated aging, tiny-headedness (microcephaly), extreme sensitivity to sunlight (even a few minutes outdoors can sear the skin), and in some cases, mental handicaps. This devastating disorder is recessive, thankfully?you need two bum copies of ercc6 to get Cockayne. Well, James Watson?s published DNA sequence says he has two bum copies. Yet he?s neither dwarfish, nor mentally deficient, nor microcephalic, and although he has aged lately, it?s nothing abnormal for an 84-year-old. Watson also supposedly has two recessive mutations that should have disabled a gene on chromosome 11, giving him Usher syndrome, which causes a Helen Keller?like deafness-blindness double whammy. If you haven?t guessed, Watson is neither deaf nor blind.

Social Media For Market Overviews And Research Considered ...

Thursday, July 26th, 2012

The other day, I was talking with an individual from Kansas and they were interested in starting a mobile car washing business, and they had heard that I had built such a company long ago. They told me they?d be willing to have me as their consultant to help them with their newly formed company. I put forth a list of things that I thought they might do to prepare their business plan. First, they needed to do a market overview and some market research.

Now then, back when I built my company we didn?t have social media or social networks, and the Internet was just getting started. I can recall that back in 1992 I had a competitor who built a website and actually got some customers from it in the city I was operating in, this was before I franchised my company. He didn?t get many companies, but he used

My News and Society Blog: Religion: Why Are People Attracted To ...

There are numerous religions in the world today; some of these have been around for thousands of years and some could be described as new in comparison. And as well as the religions that are clearly definable as religions, there are also other figures and establishments that are serving a very similar purpose.

However, these might not be noticed or perceived as having any similarities to religion.

Meaning

Before we take a look at what these reasons could be, let's look at the word religion and its meaning. In the dictionary the world religion comes from the Latin word Ligare and this means to bind.

So then, anything that connects one to something could be classed as a religion based on this meaning.

And as the saying goes 'The map is not the territory'. Something can be called a religion, but that is just a word and it does not explain much of what is actually going on. It does not explain the psychology that is involved.

The word has gained a somewhat negative meaning over time and this is because of the behaviour of some of the people that have associated themselves with a particular religion.

Religion can be blamed; but it does not take away our own individual responsibility.

The Purpose

Is not important whether one believes in religion or not. The purpose of this is to look deeply at what might be attracting people to associative with religions and at the same time what needs this could be fulfilling within the person.

This is also not to say that what attracts people to religion is always dysfunctional.

A Metaphor

It is just like when one is hungry; here one consumes food to appease the sensation of hunger. The desire to eat is not negative or dysfunctional; it is simply a part of life.

However, it would be sensible to look at why one is hungry and also what would attract one to certain foods. Sometimes these will be healthy foods and sometimes these will be unhealthy. One might be attracted to unhealthy foods, but instead of blaming the foods one can look at what is attracting them to the foods. This could be classed as being a conscious eater.

My Opinion

These views are my opinion and I do not claim to have all the answers or the only answers. My interest is not in the legitimacy of any religion or religion per se. What interests me is looking at the psychology of religion.

I believe that through the observation of how the ego mind functions, one will be able to gain a better understanding of religion.

The Ego Mind

This is the part of us that is conditioned by our experiences. Some of these can be traumatic and some of these can have very little effect on our lives. And what these experiences do is form how we perceive reality.

And the way it perceives life is though polarities. Here there are only ever two ways and the whole of life will be perceived through one of these ways. This is the good and the bad; the right and the worn and so on. Existence is then broken up into parts. Life becomes an expression of hierarchy and not wholarchy.

The ego fears change and this is because the only way it can function and exist is through things being the same. It feels safe with what is familiar. And if something were to change; it would mean death to the ego mind.

Its identity and only point of reference is the past and the present moment is always being interpreted based on past experiences.

Trauma

One of the things that trauma does is create conflict and separation. One feels separate from what they desire and need. What the ego does is project these needs externally.

These needs can consist of the need to feel: connected, empowered, significant and safe; as well as the need for meaning and purpose.

The Self

So the ego mind has ultimately been created from pain and trauma. It is not a true expression of who one is. The true self is extremely different to the ego mind. Here one is also the observer of the mind and not the mind itself

Hold On!

But let's forget about the true self for the moment and let's continue with the ego mind. Here one has been cut off from who they truly are and is now living from the ego minds perceptions and projections.

A natural consequence is to project all of these needs and wants to an external source. And to the degree that one has not realised something within; will define how much someone looks without.

How Does This Usually Look?

It is not possible to look at every aspect here; so let's look at the more common occurrences.

Higher Or Lower

With the mind working in polarities and higher being seen as better than lower, it makes complete sense for gods to often exist in the sky. This is because trauma can cause one to identify with their ego and feel inferior and below others. And if this happens and one feels inferior or below another, there will be the tendency to perceive others as being higher or superior.

Afterlife

As the ego fears change and therefore death it then becomes important for religions to promise an afterlife for example. This way the ego mind feels safe and can be sure that there is a tomorrow.

Certainty

The ego mind also needs certainty and this is part of feeling safe. As if something is different it of course won't feel safe. This also shows the importance of being right; as if the mind is wrong it could lead to death. And this surely shows why there is often the insistence on one religion being right and another religion being wrong. The individual's ego is looking for external certainty to calm the uncertainty that is active within.

Separation

And if one feels separate from life and cut off internally because of trauma or perception, they will be drawn to anything external that promises connection and a sense of belonging.

Control And Empowerment

Religion is often seen as controlling. And through the different traumas, ones ego mind is likely to feel a lack of control and empowerment. One then needs to do or be more than others to compensate for this inner state. This often becomes a need to control another or others.

And a universal figure or archetype for empowerment is often the male or masculine figure. This of course, shows up in a lot of the different religions. The female or feminine energy typically represents nurturing; so that wouldn't evoke the same experience that the male figure would do in people.

Purpose And Meaning

It is said that ones purpose and meaning is something one finds within. And is an expression of the heart and not the mind. However one of the things that conditioning and trauma does is cut one off from their heart. Ones attention is then more likely to be focused on the outside world and not on what is going on within.

So this would explain why religion is so popular in terms of purpose and meaning, it gives one what they have perhaps lost touch within or maybe haven't ever known within.

Religion

It is my view that whatever the ego mind creates has very little to do with what is true. And this is because its primary function is to ensure ones survival. What it sees and what it needs from the world will usually be coming from what has not been realised within.

Because everything that is seen externally and this includes what is written in word and what is displayed in symbols, has come from a human beings mind. And this means that it has been filtered through their level of awareness and perception. This is what makes it important to observe the mind and to see how it functions.

That is not to say that religion cannot be a catalyst or a mirror for what is within each of us. It is my current understanding that what is true can only ever come from within. And perhaps there are some religions that do match what is true for people.

Not Just Religion

But let's not leave this all to religion. As I have mentioned above, there are many things in the world that have the potential to fulfill the same purpose. These include: celebrities, the media, sports teams, fashion, governments and relationships.

They all exist because they are fulfilling a need; nothing more nothing less. Each of these external creations simply reflects what is going on within people's minds and hearts.

My name is Oliver J R Cooper and I been have been interested in self enquiry for over eight years. For just over a year, I have been expressing my understandings with these transformational writings. One of my intentions is to be a catalyst to others, as other people have been and continue to be to me.

Shark teeth have built-in toothpaste

An in-depth look at shark teeth has found that they contain fluoride, the active ingredient of most toothpaste and dental care mouthwashes.

It helps to explain why sharks are so effective at either tearing or cutting prey. Their teeth are perfectly designed for such tasks, never suffering from cavities, according to the study, recently published in the Journal of Structural Biology.

NEWS: Shark Paradise Found

While shark teeth contain the mineral fluoroapatite (fluorinated calcium phosphate), the teeth of humans and other mammals contain hydroxyapatite, which is an inorganic constituent also found in bone, explained co-author Matthias Epple.

?In order to make teeth more acid resistant, toothpaste often contains fluoride,? Epple, a professor of inorganic chemistry at the University of Duisburg-Essen, told Discovery News. ?In the surface of human teeth after brushing, a small amount ? much less than 1 percent ? of hydroxide is exchanged by fluoride.?

?In contrast,? he added, ?(the surface of) shark teeth contains 100 percent fluoride. In principle, sharks should not suffer from caries. As they live in water and as they change their teeth regularly, dental protection should not be a problem for sharks.?

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

    1. When it's raining, run, don't walk

When you're caught in a downpour with no umbrella, should you run or walk? Running will get you out of the rain faster, but at the risk of encountering more drops along the way ? and therein lies the dilemma. Now, science gives the go-ahead: in most cases, run.

    2. Searchers find no sign of Amelia Earhart's plane
    3. Loud sex can be deadly for flies
    4. Don't blame Darwin for theater shootings

For the study, Epple and colleagues Joachim Enax, Oleg Prymak and Dierk Raabe used a multitude of high-tech investigative techniques, including scanning electron micrographs, to look at the teeth of two different sharks: the shortfin mako (Isurus oxyrinchus) and the tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier). These sharks were chosen because of their different eating habits. Shortfin makos tear the flesh of prey, while tiger sharks cut flesh.

Despite these differences, the teeth of the both sharks were found to have a similar chemical and crystalline composition. In addition to the highly mineralized enamel exterior, the interior of shark teeth was determined to contain a soft material known as ?dentin,? which contains more protein and is more elastic. Human teeth also have dentin.

Mechanical measurements and tests on the micro and nano-scales determined that shark teeth are not harder than human teeth.

?This finding is surprising, because the mineral fluoroapatite is harder than the mineral hydroxyapatite, so if a tooth were to consist of the mineral alone, a shark tooth would be harder than a human tooth,? Epple said. ?It seems as if the human tooth makes up for the less hard mineral by the special arrangement of the enamel crystals and the protein matrix, and ends up being as hard as a shark tooth.?

He continued that if the teeth of any animal, including humans, were all mineral and super hard, they would be more brittle and prone to shattering. Nature therefore has ways of circumventing this problem, with teeth ?built up from small crystals that are arranged in a special ?architecture? to make them mechanically stronger.? The small amount of protein in teeth, also present in other hard structures like bone and shells, makes these things more elastic.

SHARK WEEK: Don?t Miss the 25th Anniversary of Shark Week

Andrew Gillis, a Dalhousie University biologist, told Discovery News that the new study ?nicely shows how we can see beautiful evidence of adaptation from the level of whole organs all the way down to the nano scale in the chemical nature and organization of crystals within tooth tissues. This sort of work really addresses, at the most fundamental level, how teeth have evolved to deal with the remarkable stresses that they endure in nature.?

Peter Fratzl, a professor at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces, told Discovery News that he was interested to learn that shark teeth are covered with the mineral fluoroapatite.

?It is quite interesting to see that this repeats a very similar and very recent observation about the crayfish mandible, which also turns out to be covered with fluoroapatite although the two species, shark and crayfish, are totally unrelated, but both living under water.?

Fratzl said it?s possible that fluoroapatite coatings are much less water soluble than hydroxyapatite and are therefore ?more stable in water and more resistant against bacterial attack.?

In addition to the unique structure of their teeth, sharks also have the handy ability to replace their teeth several times during their lives. This is not due to cavities, but rather because their teeth sometimes wind up stuck in prey or are otherwise forced out.

(AP) ? Mitt Romney wanted to highlight U.S.-British bonds ? and show off his diplomatic skills to boot ? but he managed to rankle the Olympic hosts instead, from Prime Minister David Cameron on down.

The Republican presidential candidate, taking a turn on the world stage, called London's problems with Olympic Games preparation "disconcerting." That prompted Cameron to retort on Thursday that doubters would "see beyond doubt that Britain can deliver." And London Mayor Boris Johnson told tens of thousands gathered in Hyde Park: "There's a guy called Mitt Romney who wants to know if we are ready. Are we ready? Yes we are!"

Amid the uproar, Romney tried to back off his critique, finally concluding, "I expect the games to be highly successful."

Romney also caused a stir with his attendance at a fundraiser with banking executives tainted by a British interest rate-fixing scandal. And he inadvertently disclosed that he held a secret meeting with the head of Britain's intelligence service.

The bobbles threatened to undermine Romney's first international tour as the man who would replace Democratic President Barack Obama.

A one-term Massachusetts governor with limited foreign policy experience, he is hoping to show voters back home that he is ready to represent the U.S. strongly and smoothly at a time of global economic turmoil and security troubles. He also wants to emphasize his own tenure running the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City by attending this year's opening ceremonies. And he hopes to draw subtle contrasts with Obama.

"I'm looking forward to the bust of Winston Churchill being in the Oval Office again," Romney told donors at a fundraiser, Obama's administration sent back to Britain a bust of Churchill that once sat in the Oval Office. Obama aides say it was scheduled to be returned.

All in all, though, it was a shaky start to Romney's planned weeklong trip overseas that will include Israel and Poland after England.

As he met with British leaders past and present, Romney sought to keep the focus on the close alliance between America and Britain, praising "the unique relationship that exists between our nations, our commitment to common values, our commitment to peace in the world and a desire to see a stronger and growing economy."

But he may have ended up straining his own relationship with the British ? and embarrassing them ? by questioning whether the country could host a flawless Olympics after years of preparation.

England has constructed an enormous Olympic Park in East London, will showcase tennis at Wimbledon, is hosting soccer in Glasgow in Scotland and has even built a volleyball court behind No. 10 Downing Street, where Romney met with Cameron. Yet, the country has faced steady media coverage of things that have gone wrong: A security firm didn't hire enough people; problems at immigration threatened security risks.

Shortly after arriving in London on Wednesday, Romney told NBC News that it was unclear whether issues that have dogged the final preparations could be overcome, saying: "It's hard to know just how well it will turn out." He made the remark two days before the opening ceremonies and after his staff had attended the dress rehearsal for that show.

By the next morning, Cameron was standing outside Olympic Park responding to questions about Romney's comments.

"We are holding an Olympic Games in one of the busiest, most active, bustling cities anywhere in the world. Of course it's easier if you hold an Olympic Games in the middle of nowhere," Cameron added. His aides said that was not intended as a jibe at Romney or Salt Lake City. But that didn't stop people on the Internet and elsewhere from suggesting it was.

As criticism of Romney's comments mounted, he suggested it's impossible for any Olympic Games to go off without a hitch.

Later, Romney and Cameron met in private, discussing economic issues and alliances in Afghanistan and Syria ? as well as the Olympics ? and the American sought again to clarify his remarks on the games.

"It is impossible for absolutely no mistakes to occur," he said. "Of course there will be errors from time to time, but those are all overshadowed by the extraordinary demonstrations of courage, character and determination by the athletes."

By the end of the day Thursday, Romney was outlining his own mistakes as a way of explaining why he had mentioned problems with security forces and immigration enforcement.

"My experience as an Olympic organizer is that there are always a few very small things that end up not going quite right in the first day or so ? these get ironed out and then when the games themselves begin and the athletes take over," Romney said as he stood outside No. 10 Downing St. "All the mistakes of the organizing committee, and I made a few, all of those are overwhelmed by the many things that the athletes carry out that capture the spirit of the Games."

Back home, White House spokesman Jay Carney piled on, telling reporters about an Olympic security briefing held in Washington.

"In keeping with our special relationship, the president also made it clear that he has the utmost confidence in our close friend and ally, the United Kingdom, as they finalize preparations to host the London Olympics," Carney said.

After a day of meetings and an interview with CNN, Romney headed to a fundraiser at the Mandarin Oriental hotel that raised over $2 million. It attracted employees of Barclays, which has been in the spotlight after becoming the first bank to admit its employees were involved in manipulating a key interest rate index.

Last month, U.S. and British agencies fined Barclays a total of $453 million. Chief executive Bob Diamond resigned. Diamond was to have been a host of Romney's fundraiser. He dropped out of the event but had already sent a check for $2,500.

So have 82 others who listed their employer as Barclays or Barclays Capital on Federal Election Commission records, including two who gave the maximum to the Romney campaign both in 2011 and 2012.

Reports of Barclays' links to the Romney campaign drew the attention of some members of the British House of Commons, who called on "Barclays and its executives to cease fundraising for political candidates immediately and to concentrate entirely on repairing confidence and trust in the banking system instead."

Romney took questions from the donors who had gathered in a ballroom at the hotel in the Knightsbridge neighborhood in London. Asked about how he would deal with banking regulation, Romney said the Republican Party has sometimes made a "mistake" in focusing too much on deregulation ? but that a sweeping banking overhaul passed in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis went too far.

"I believe Dodd-Frank has gone beyond what was appropriate," Romney said of the banking bill.

Earlier, Romney met with the head of MI-6, Britain's intelligence service, during his visit to the Foreign Commonwealth Office. The meeting wasn't listed on public schedules, and revealing such a meeting isn't common in the U.K. But the Republican presidential candidate told reporters about it in a statement outside Cameron's home.

In his other meetings, British officials questioned Romney about so-called fiscal "cliff" that U.S. policymakers will have to deal with next year, as well as his plans to expand trade and potentially develop a free trade agreement between America and the Europeans. Romney asked questions about the situations in Iran and also in Syria, where a broiling conflict has the potential to flare as an election issue in the fall.

The candidate's troubles started even before he landed in London.

Earlier this week, the Australians issued a statement clarifying Foreign Minister Bob Carr's remarks after Romney told donors that Carr met with him and sees an "America in decline."

Romney also has faced criticism in the Jewish press abroad for scheduling a fundraiser on Tisha B'Av, a Jewish fasting day that commemorates the destruction of two temples in Jerusalem. And Romney was forced to distance himself from an unnamed campaign adviser quoted in the Daily Telegraph newspaper saying that Romney believes the U.S. relationship with Britain is special because of shared "Anglo Saxon heritage" and that the current White House doesn't appreciate that shared history.

Do I need a Mental Game Coach or am I just Crazy? | The Running ...

Recently I had a couple athletes mention to me that they weren?t sure if mental game coaching was warranted for them. They alluded to must being ?abnormal? or ?kinda crazy? if someone would need a mental game coach. It?s a curious stigma attached to mental game coaching field. Mental game coaching, mental toughness coaching, or whatever you would like to call it is simply applied sports psychology.

When Mental Training is indicated.

  1. You perform better in practice than during competition.
  2. You have too many perfectionistic qualities.
  3. You don?t perform well when others are watching you.
  4. You maintain self-doubt about your sport before or during games.
  5. You maintain perfectionistic attitudes about performances.
  6. You feel anxious or scared when you perform in competition.
  7. You limit performance with strict expectations.
  8. You attach your self-worth to your ability to perform.
  9. You lose focus during critical times of the competition.
  10. After an injury, you are physically 100% recovered, but you can?t perform the way you did pre-injury.
  11. You have a burning desire to get better.
  12. You find that your sport has turned into a stressor instead of stress relief.

?A Mental Games Professional can help with the following areas.

  1. Improve focus and deal with distractions.
  2. Grow confidence in athletes who have doubts.
  3. Develop coping skills to deal with setbacks and errors.
  4. Find the right zone of intensity for your sport.
  5. Help teams develop communication skills and cohesion.
  6. Instill a healthy belief system and identify irrational thoughts.
  7. Learn how perfectionism is used to benefit performances.
  8. Improve or balance motivation for optimal performance.
  9. Develop confidence post-injury.
  10. Develop game-specific strategies and game plans.
  11. Identify and enter the ?zone? more often.
  12. Enhance team cohesion, leadership & communication.
  13. Teach mental skills related to confidence, focus, composure, routines, stress management, etc.
  14. Improve practice efficiency and transfer of practice to competition.
  15. Improve emotional state management to increase pleasure, enjoyment and satisfaction.

A mental game professional may not be appropriate for everyone. Not everyone wants to ?improve performance? or simply enjoy their sport more. Sport psychology may not be for a recreational athlete who participates primarily for the purposes of socialization and having fun on weekends (Unless of course you are that weekend golfer and you are finding that YOU are your worst enemy on the links and it is decreasing your enjoyment of the sport!). If you do not spend time improving fitness or the technical sport-specific motor skills in a deliberate fashion (i.e. with a coach or structured program), then most likely you will not adhere to a mental coaching program. Young athletes whose parents force them to see a mental games coach are not good candidates either. The young athlete should understand and desire improvement in his or her mental game without the motivation to satisfy the parent ? or a coach for that matter.

A mental game professional helps a variety of serious athletes. By serious I mean athletes committed to improvement, motivated, want to explore their limits and understand the importance of a positive attitude and mental toughness. These athletes want every advantage they can, including the mental edge over their competition.

A Mental Game Coaching Professional is not a Sports Psychologist. A licensed psychologist is trained in identifying psychopathology and typically works with clients on personal issues that are not sports related.

So, no you are not crazy when you are in need of a mental game coach. Most professional sports teams have one, every US Olympic team has at least one or more, most elite athletes have used one at one time or another.

Batavia representatives explain property tax process

BATAVIA ? Batavia resident Terrence Pogge said he was shocked after receiving what he called a ?huge jump? in his school taxes this year.

?It?s not that I don?t support what they are doing,? said
Pogge, a former teacher. ?I?m more concerned about the district?s expenses. I have questions about the district?s management and efficiency.?

Pogge was one of 80 to 100 people who attended Tuesday?s Eggs & Issues program at Batavia High School titled ?Understanding Your Property Tax Increase.? The Batavia Chamber of Commerce and Batavia MainStreet sponsored the program.

Representatives from the Batavia School District, city of Batavia, Batavia Park District and the Batavia Library District spoke at the meeting.

Rising school district property taxes generated much of the interest at the meeting. Residents saw an average increase of 10.8 percent in their school taxes this year, said Kris Monn, the district?s assistant superintendent for finance.

Monn explained that the school board from 2007 to 2010 abated $6.3 million of taxes from the community to respond to the economic crisis. In 2011, Monn said the board no longer had any reserves to lower the debt payment and refused to burden future generations with increased debt.

?The tax increase and extension were allowed to return to their natural level, resulting in a large increase on the 2012 tax bills,? Monn said.

The school board had previously agreed to keep the district?s tax rate at $4.69 per $100 of assessed valuation as part of the community?s support in 2007 of a $75 million bond project to fund the expansion of Batavia High School and other construction projects.

Monn said homeowners next year should see an increase of $50 in their school taxes, assuming an average property value decrease of 5 percent.

The district is projecting a surplus of $143,000 in its operating fund for the 2012-2013 budget. A public hearing on the tentative budget is set for 7 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Rosalie M. Jones Administration Center, 335 W. Wilson St.

Kane County Supervisor of Assessments Mark Armstrong told residents that if residents really want to lower their taxes, they should make their voices known at budget hearings.

?Everything starts off with the tentative budget,? he said. ?This is the time if you want to have input on the budget. When the tax bill comes out, it is too late to think about that government spending.?

There are 37 hours, 2 minutes remaining to comment on this story.

Netflix subscriber outlook disappoints, shares plunge

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Netflix Inc warned on Tuesday it may have trouble reaching its year-end target for new subscribers and will record a loss in the final three months of the year, news that sent the video rental company's shares down nearly 16 percent after hours.

For the second-quarter, Netflix reported earnings of 11 cents a share, beating analysts expectations of 5 cents, and said it added 530,0000 new customers to its video streaming service in the U.S. market.

But in a quarterly letter to shareholders, the company said the Olympic games that begin this month will likely hurt its ability to sign-up new customers in the current quarter, when it expects to add 1 million to 1.8 million subscribers.

If Netflix misses the top of that range, it will be "challenging" to reach the company's goal of 7 million new U.S. streaming subscribers for all of 2012, CEO Reed Hastings and CFO David Wells said in the shareholder letter.

The uncertainty about subscriber growth rattled investors, Wall Street analysts said. Netflix shares dropped 15.8 percent to $67.70 in after-hours trading from their $80.39 close on Nasdaq.

"There's some waffling around the streaming guidance domestically for the year," Dougherty & Co analyst Steve Frankel said, explaining the share decline.

Netflix also said it would lose money in the fourth quarter when it launches in another international market.

The company recorded a loss in the first three months of the year as it expanded into Britain and Ireland, but it came back with a $6 million profit in the second quarter. Revenue rose to $889 million, up 12 percent from a year earlier.

"We have enormous challenges ahead and no doubt will have further ups and downs as we pioneer Internet television," Hastings and Wells said. But they added: "We are making progress in every market we serve."

Netflix needs to keep growing fast to pay the commitments to Walt Disney Co , Warner Bros , CBS Corp and others to stream their movies and TV shows. At the same time, it faces emerging competition from websites such as Amazon.com Inc and Hulu.

Total U.S. subscribers for the Netflix online service that streams movies and TV shows reached 23.9 million at the end of June, the company said. It added 560,000 customers in foreign markets, for a total of 3.6 million.

Netflix is moving away from mailing DVDs in its signature red envelopes, a business that only operates in the United States. DVD customers declined by 850,000 in the second quarter.

A year ago, Netflix posted earnings of $1.26 a share for the quarter, which ended just before its controversial decisions to raise prices and charge separately for its streaming and mail service prompted a wave of cancellations.

Pacific Crest Securities analyst Andy Hargreaves said the company's underlying business was solid and subscriber growth was in line with what he expected.

"The margins were fine," he said. "They are still growing and still leveraging the business."

Droplings Is A Little App That Makes It Easier To Share Dropbox Files

Screen Shot 2012-07-23 at 9.39.08 AMIt's actually quite hard to send a public link to someone in Dropbox. You have to dump the file, find it, sometimes right click and sometimes jump over to the website, and then grab the right link. Thankfully, Droplings improves things immensely. To use Droplings, you simply drag a file to the tiny drop in the corner of your OS X screen. The file is uploaded automatically and a public link appears in your clipboard. The system also builds a preview page around the file that you can edit to suit your own needs. It's really that simple. The app is free right now, although there could be a paid version forthcoming.

To understand childhood obesity, researchers look to inactive, fat rats

ScienceDaily (July 24, 2012) ? Childhood obesity has nearly tripled in the past three decades, and by 2009, 17 percent of those 2-19 years of age were classified as obese. If actions against childhood obesity do not take place it is likely that today's children could be the first generation in over a century to experience a decline in life expectancy due to the epidemic of childhood obesity which leads to complications in later life. While little is known about how inactivity and obesity lead to undesirable side effects such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some cancers, scientists at the University of Missouri in Columbia have reviewed dozens of studies that look at childhood obesity using new animal models. The scientists suggest that the models could be key to better understanding the condition and its complex relationship to certain diseases.

The article appears in the online edition of the American Journal of Physiology -- Regulatory, Integrative, and Comparative Physiology, published by the American Physiological Society.

Using Inactive, Fat Rats to Study Juvenile Obesity

Lead author Dr. Michael Roberts and his colleagues have written a review article outlining previous research, including some of their own studies, on various animal models that simulate childhood obesity through inactivity. The researchers concentrate specifically on a particular example, called the rodent wheel lock model, to study how different organ systems of young rats respond to a cessation of daily physical activity. This model houses rats in cages with running wheels starting at 28 days of age, which the animals voluntarily use for the next three to six weeks. After that period, the wheels are locked, preventing their primary source of physical activity.

The researchers assert that findings from a variety of studies of juvenile obesity in humans show that children who are inactive in childhood are significantly more likely than those who engaged in exercise when young to continue this habit into adulthood. Additionally, they say, this inactivity in childhood initiates the mechanisms that lead to the consequences of obesity seen in adults. Using the wheel lock model and other animal models for studying childhood obesity is giving scientists more insight on exactly what happens when activity is restricted during youth, leading to obesity.

For example, studies have shown that young, inactive rats have reduced insulin sensitivity (a precursor to type-2 diabetes), eat more and burn off fewer calories, and develop larger fat pads than animals who continue to exercise. Other studies show that fat cells multiply to a significantly greater extent in rats who aren't allowed to run on their wheels, while others show that such voluntary exercise in parents can stem positive transgenerational effects in offspring that are bred to be genetically predisposed to obesity (for instance, reduced body fat). Additionally, the wheel lock and other animal model suggest that exercise during youth may help preserve muscle mass over the course of aging and lower the activity of genes associated with cardiovascular disease.

Importance of the Findings

The authors suggest that the wheel lock model and other models that allow exercise, then block it later, are akin to modern-day living conditions in which children who are active during the summer become increasingly sedentary when the school year starts. For these children, voluntary exercise abruptly ends when they must ride in motorized vehicles to school, sit in classrooms, and have insufficient recess or physical education classes. By studying these conditions in rats and other animals, Roberts and his colleagues say, researchers can avoid the ethical conundrum involved in forcing active children to refrain from exercise, imposing biopsies and other tissue sampling techniques, or other parts of research that are possible in animals but not in humans. However, the authors note that animal research still has a long way to go.

They suggest that future studies incorporating animal models of childhood obesity take place over longer periods to determine how inactivity during youth contributes to adult consequences of obesity and whether interventions, such as reintroducing exercise, can affect this trajectory. They also note that future studies should examine whether restricting exercise during childhood could affect future motivation to exercise in adulthood, something preliminary work in their lab and others' has suggested.

"Continuing to examine the effects of inactivity on physiological homeostasis during youth is crucial given that 58 percent of children between the ages of 6-11 fail to obtain the recommended 60 minutes per day of physical activity and 92 percent of adolescents fail to achieve this goal," the authors say. "Importantly we contend that using juvenile rodent inactivity models will continue to provide a powerful clinical translational tool that can be used for primordial prevention of human childhood obesity."
