Where can I find the stock kernel for my Samsung Galaxy S2?

I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 phone (GT-I9100). I installed clockworkmod, a custom kernel and rom (Resurrection Remix) earlier this year. One day I couldn't boot it anymore. I restored a backup of the stock rom still on my sd card. My phone worked fine again, except that my camera doesn't show me any image while running. I can take pictures and videos, but I'm blind while filming. I'm presuming this is because I still have the custom kernel installed. I would like to get back to an official Samsung kernel compatible with my old stock rom.

  1. Where can I find such a kernel?
  2. How can I be sure that it is the right one for my ROM?
  3. What steps must I take to ensure that I can at least get back to the current state if something goes wrong in the process?

This is my current setup:

Model: GT-I9100

Android: 4.0.4

Band: I9100XXLPX

Kernel 3.0.15-TH codeworkx@cyanogenmod #2 SMP PREEMPT Sun Apr 29 10:50:29 CEST 2012

Version: IMM76D.BULPG

I appreciate any help you can give me on this topic.

Washington Nationals: Marlins hand Strasburg his worst defeat

MIAMI (AP) - Marcell Ozuna drove in three runs, and Giancarlo Stanton homered for the Miami Marlins, who dealt Stephen Strasburg the worst loss of his career in a 8-3 win over the Washington Nationals on Friday night.

Strasburg (5-7) allowed a career-high seven earned runs and tied a career-high with four walks in two innings after the Nationals spotted him a 3-0 lead.

It was his shortest outing since he pitched two innings on May 31 at Atlanta. He left that game early because of a lat strain that forced him to go on the disabled list.

Washington has lost four of five.

Nathan Eovaldi (2-0) settled down after a rough first inning and held the Nationals without a run over the next five innings. He struck out five and walked four.

The Nationals took a 3-0 lead on a two-run double by Adam LaRoche and an RBI groundout by Jayson Werth.

It was rare run support for Strasburg, who entered the game with a 2.45 ERA, but he was unable to hold the lead.

Strasburg walked three of the first four batters he faced, and Ozuna made him pay with a bases-clearing triple to deep center field that tied the game 3-3.

Derek Dietrich and Eovaldi followed with RBI singles, and the Marlins sent 10 batters to the plate in the first inning and led 5-3.

Stanton's ninth home run of the season, a two-run shot into the Nationals bullpen in right field, stretched Miami's lead to 7-3.

Adeiny Hechavarria, who singled in the first to extend his career-best hitting streak to 11 games, had an RBI double in the seventh to make it 8-3.

NOTES: Strasburg also gave up seven runs on Aug. 28, 2012, against the Marlins, but only five were earned. ... Marlins RHP Henderson Alvarez will start on Sunday, replacing Kevin Slowey, so Alvarez can get another start before the All-Star break. ... Marlins RHP Chad Qualls will be placed on the paternity list on Saturday and then join the team in Milwaukee after the break. ... Marlins rookie All-Star RHP Jose Fernandez (5-5, 2.83 ERA) will take the mound on Saturday against Nationals RHP Dan Haren (4-10, 6.00 ERA).

John Hood: Tax reform will allow N.C. to compete for jobs

Liberal politicians, activists and commentators have spent months prodding, baiting andcriticizing Republican Gov. Pat McCrory and the Republican-led legislature. While occasionally goading their targets into making unwise comments, the obstructionists have failed to keep North Carolina?s new conservative leaders from pursuing fundamental reforms of the state?s failed public policies.

Frustrated and desperate, liberals are resorting to increasingly silly and circular claims. A recent tactic has been to persuade left-leaning media outlets to cover their Moral Monday protests at the legislature and then cite that media coverage to prove that conservatives are hurting the state?s brand with potential corporate recruits.

Time for some realism. Investors, entrepreneurs and business executives don?t make multi-?million-dollar decisions on the basis of Huffington Post screeds and MSNBC tirades. They put their money where it is mostly likely to generate the highest, sustained after-tax return.

Liberal critics argue that if the N.C. General Assembly enacts a tax bill with dramatic reductions in marginal tax rates, a resulting lack of state spending on public schools and universities will deter rather than attract new business to the state. Their argument rests on the notion that, until now, North Carolina has bested lower-taxed states in recruiting top-flight corporations precisely because we were spending more money.

The only value to this claim is that it makes the claimants feel better about themselves. On the merits, the argument is incorrect in every way.

First of all, who says that North Carolina has been besting its competitors at attracting top-flight corporations? The residents of Virginia, Georgia, Florida and Texas ? all populous Southern states with more Fortune 500 company headquarters and lower jobless rates than North Carolina can boast ? would beg to differ with this assertion.

Obviously there is more to building strong economies and attracting companies to a state than having low tax rates. But just as obviously, states that manage to deliver necessary government services at a lower cost have a leg up in the competition for business investment and job creation. Each of these Southern competitors imposes lower marginal tax rates on investment and corporate income than North Carolina does. They all have smaller, less costly governments, too. Even if the General Assembly were immediately to enact the Senate?s ambitious tax bill, North Carolina?s overall tax burden would likely remain higher than that of Virginia, Georgia, Florida and Texas ? but at least those taxes would be raised with lower marginal rates on broader tax bases, a policy friendlier to economic growth than our current approach.

But what of North Carolina?s high business-climate rankings from Site Selection magazine and other groups? Critics of the new conservative majority in Raleigh tend to cite these ratings without studying them. The ratings are heavily influenced by economic-incentive policies, of which North Carolina has become an aggressive ? one might even say desperate ? purveyor. It is weird, to say the least, to construct an argument that state taxes aren?t important to economic growth by citing national rankings that place a high premium on tax incentives.

As it happens, there is strong evidence that targeted incentives aren?t particularly effective in promoting sustained growth, because they can?t make up for an underlying tax system with high marginal rates. The very fact that North Carolina has ranked well on such business-climate measures despite having, objectively, a poor climate for business growth (i.e., one of the weakest economies in the nation for years) leads me to believe that those business-climate measures aren?t very good. Perhaps I?m just being too literal.

Whatever else may be said about the 2013 legislative session, fiscal conservatives have no reason to fear that reforming and reducing North Carolina taxes will hurt the state?s brand with out-of-state investors, executives andentrepreneurs. When combined with additional pro-growth reforms of the state?s regulations, infrastructure andeducation system, tax reform will send a clear signal that North Carolina is finally ready to compete with Virginia, Georgia, Florida, Texas and other, healthier economies.

Moto X's Open Mic demoed, enables voice command when screen is off

Just when we're getting bored of all these static Moto X leaks, a couple of new video clips popped up to finally show off some of the software goodies. The first one appears to be a leaked Rogers promotional video (embedded after the break), in which a nice lady introduces us to a new Google Now voice command feature, which can be toggled with a custom phrase even when the screen is off. According to another clip uploaded by kronikbudz, said feature is called Open Mic, but there's no indication as to whether this will be exclusive to Motorola devices or whether it'll come with the next Android release.

The Rogers video adds that the Moto X will provide ambient "active updates" notifications on the screen when the phone is locked, and this is pitched as a more sensible replacement for the meaningless blinking light. Later on, the same lady demonstrates how one can activate the phone's camera -- even when locked -- by simply twisting the wrist twice. We're a bit worried that this may allow accidental activations, unless the phone can detect whether it is inside a pocket or bag.

Finally, the lady says the Moto X will be "exclusively" heading to Rogers this August in either black or white, thus confirming the "late Summer" window that we were previously told. Enjoy your very own exclusivity while it lasts, Mr. Schmidt!

Box office: 'Despicable Me 2' stays on top

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Universal's minions ran away with the box office for the second week in a row.

With $44.8 million in domestic ticket sales, the animated sequel "Despicable Me 2" outdid the debuts of the Adam Sandler comedy "Grown Ups 2" and Guillermo Del Toro's monsters-versus-robots action flick "Pacific Rim."

Sony was pleased with Sandler's second-best movie opening of his career with $42.5 million in sales.

But the third-place finish of the big-budget movie "Pacific Rim" with $38.3 million represented a disappointing start for Warner Bros. and partner Legendary Entertainment.

Asiana flight attendants make news with bravery

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Before Asiana Flight 214 crash-landed in San Francisco, the last time the Korean airlines' flight attendants made news it was over an effort by their union earlier this year to get the dress code updated so female attendants could wear trousers.

Now, with half of the 12-person cabin crew having suffered injuries in the accident and the remaining attendants receiving praise for displaying heroism during the emergency evacuation, the focus has shifted from their uniform looks to their heroic actions.

In the July 6 crash three members of the crew were ejected from the plane's sheared off tail section while still strapped in their seats. Those who were able, meanwhile, oversaw the emergency evacuation of nearly 300 passengers ? using knives to slash seatbelts, calling pilots who slung axes to free two colleagues trapped by malfunctioning slides, fighting flames and bringing out frightened children.

"I wasn't really thinking, but my body started carrying out the steps needed for an evacuation," head attendant Lee Yoon-hye, 40, said during a news conference Sunday night before federal safety investigators instructed the airlines not to let the crew discuss the accident. "I was only thinking about rescuing the next passenger."

Such conduct has given a measure of pride to members of a profession who often are recognized only for their appearance and customer service skills.

"In the face of tremendous adversity and obstacles, they did their job and evacuated an entire wide-bodied aircraft in a very short period of time," said Veda Shook, international president of the Association of Flight Attendants and an Alaska Airlines flight attendant.

"It's such a shining reflection, not just of the crew, but of the importance of flight attendants in their roles as first responders," Shook said.

Along with training in first aid and firefighting, flight attendants every year are required to practice the moves needed to get passengers off a plane in 90 seconds or less, Shook said. They go through timed trials, practicing skills that include shouting over pandemonium and engine noise, communicating with people frozen in fear and opening jammed doors and windows, she said. The goal is to make performing these tasks automatic.

"We have the muscle memory," Shook said.

It's a significant departure from the days when flight attendants were always women and known as stewardesses or air hostesses. In that era decades ago, members of the cabin crew weren't expected to play much of a role in emergencies.

Laura Brentlinger, who spent 31 years as a United Airlines flight attendant, recalled having no idea how much danger everyone was in during one of her first emergency landings in 1972. She didn't realize the severity of the situation until it was over and she saw the pilot's face.

"In those days, it was like pat you on the head, just go back and keep the people nice and smile. That's how far we've come, thank the Lord," Brentlinger said. "We were just little Barbie dolls back there."

The role of flight attendants in the U.S. expanded significantly in 1989 after Air Ontario Flight 1363 crashed after taking off in Canada. An investigation revealed that a flight attendant had seen ice on a wing but did not speak up, assuming the pilots knew and would not welcome the information from her.

Since then, FAA rules have required that cabin crew members be incorporated into the communications system known as "crew resource management" that empowers all airline personnel to voice concerns to the cockpit even if it means challenging senior pilots.

The philosophy also authorizes flight attendants to order emergency evacuations. Hearing that the pilots of Asiana Flight 214 told the flight attendants to delay an evacuation for 90 seconds after the crash landing in San Francisco, giving the order only after a flight attendant spotted flames outside, made Brentlinger wonder whether Asiana Airline's attendants have the same authority.

"I'm sure they have a very different hierarchy and can't do anything without the pilot's permission," she said. "There is no doubt in my mind I would have evacuated that aircraft immediately."

Brentlinger said her heart aches when she thinks about what Asiana's flight attendants are going through now and are likely to go through in the months to come.

She was aboard a 747 that lost a cargo door at 22,000 feet, sucking nine passengers to their deaths over the Pacific Ocean in 1989.

After the disaster aboard United Flight 811, Brentlinger said she suffered severe post-traumatic stress disorder and was unable to get back on a plane for more than four years. Handling the emergency itself was "the easiest part of the whole process ... because you train for it and you just do it," she said.

She went on to say that "after the dust settles, so to speak" and one tries to get on with life, "it's horrific, at least it was for me."

The Flight 214 cabin crew consisted of 11 women and one man, ranging in age from 21 to 42, according to the airline. Spokeswoman Lee Hyomin said Asiana is not sharing information on emergency training hours of its flight attendants because the National Transportation Safety Board asked it not to share any information related to the accident while it's being investigated.

Jean Carmela Lim, 32, a Sydney-based travel consultant, spent a year working as an Asiana flight attendant eight years ago and posted pictures from her experience on her travel blog, Holy Smithereens, this week. She recalls her weeks-long safety training as rigorous.

"We needed to be able to swim while dragging another human ? dead weight ? in one hand, and hoist ourselves and the dead weight onto the safety raft," Lim said.

The appearance standards were almost as demanding. Lim, who was 23 when she applied for the job, initially was told she too old. During the interview, she was required to wear a short skirt without stockings. Flight attendant school included sessions on hair, makeup and comportment. During flights, the cabin manager inspected the attendants to make sure they were wearing the right color of nail polish and had their aprons properly ironed.

Lim said that appearance is important, but seeing pictures of Flight 214's attendants outside the burned-out aircraft in skirts made her hope their union prevails on the pants issue.

"If there's evidence that wearing a skirt will enable you to save more lives than wearing pants, then by all means keep them in skirts," she said. "If I'm trapped in a burning aircraft , I doubt I'll notice if the cabin crew saving me had lipstick on her teeth or had a tuft of hair out of place."

Pewpewpew...click? Guns jam if you play this shooter on a jailbroken iPhone

Gamers trying to play the new iOS game "Deus Ex: The Fall" on jailbroken devices soon discovered that none of the guns in the game worked for them.

Square Enix

Gamers trying to play the new iOS game "Deus Ex: The Fall" on jailbroken devices soon discovered that none of the guns in the game worked for them.

"Deus Ex: The Fall" is the first iOS game set in the acclaimed cyberpunk universe of the "Deus Ex" video game franchise ? a series of hit first- and third-person shooters that first made their mark on gaming culture for the way they allowed players to progress without having to actually kill a single person. Apparently, "The Fall's" developers had an idea for a non-lethal version of their own, but it's one that's much more punitive to players ? users accessing the game through a jailbroken iOS game aren't able to use the game's guns.

Mind you, "Deus Ex: The Fall" is a shooter, so having your guns jam pretty much ruins the entire point of the game. And while this might appear to be another case of a developer coming up with a clever way to exact poetic justice on pirates, jailbreaking an iPhone (though not necessarily an iPad) is a perfectly legal ? albeit warranty-breaking ? activity.

"Deus Ex: The Fall" was first released on the app store Thursday morning for the relatively steep price (in iOS game terms) of $6.99. By Thursday night, a player had already posted a screenshot on Reddit showing a pop-up error message that appeared during the game's tutorial saying, "We are sorry but you can't fire on jailbroken devices."

"This is massively offensive on Square Enix's behalf," KipEnyan explained on the Reddit thread they began. "The obvious implication is that all jailbreakers are pirates who more than likely pirated this game. I paid good money for this game and Squeenix feels it's okay to break my game because I prefer to customize my iPhone to my liking."

Several user reviews on the Apple App Store have also highlighted the issue.

"$7 for a game that doesn't work on jail broken devices. No warning in App Store description," one iTunes user wrote. "No warning - one star, would give zero if I could. Want my money back!"

"I bought this game and can't play it because I'm jailbroken," another said, demanding that "The Fall" publisher Square Enix refund copies of the game.

We have reached out to Square Enix for comment on the performance of "Deus Ex: The Fall" on jailbroken devices and will update this story when we hear back.

Galaxy S3, S4 and Note 2 ZeroLemon battery reviews visualised

Galaxy S3, S4 and Note 2 ZeroLemon battery reviews visualised

Smartphone battery life can often be a touchy subject among owners of certain handsets, and sometimes no matter how good it is there will be times that we need more. There are solutions to this problem though in the form of replacement batteries or special cases, and today we are looking at some ZeroLemon battery reviews for the Samsung Galaxy S3, S4, and Note 2.

The first video we have for you is the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the 7,000 mAh ZeroLemon battery pack, which compares to the 2,100 mAh battery that comes with the handset. The replacement battery is huge and takes a while to get it fitted correctly but when it?s in place with the special rear cover put over the top of it you can see how much larger the handset is now.

It has a matte feel to it and the volume controls and power button now need a harder press for them to work, but the rear cover does add some protection to the smartphone. The next video is for the Galaxy Note 2 which is a handset that is always praised for its battery life but the ZeroLemon now adds a 9,300 mAh unit compared to the 3,100 mAh battery that comes with the smartphone.

The battery pack comes with a similar rear case that includes all the cut outs for the handsets features including the stylus and this one seems to fit in easier than the Galaxy S3 version. Once fitted it at least doubles the thickness of the smartphone with a weighty feel that the reviewer liked, but previously we have seen one user fit a 9,000 mAh battery to their Note 2.

Again the buttons need a firmer press to get them to work and when fitted a unit such as this may not be ideal for everyday use, but if you know it?s going to be a long time before you can reach a charger it will be ideal.

The last video we have for you is the Galaxy S4 version of the ZeroLemon battery pack and is 7,500 mAh in size, which replaces the 2,600 mAh standard battery. Check out the three videos and tell us if you ever need a boost in battery such as this.

Flush With Oil and Gas Cash, North Dakota?s Growth Tops in Nation

An oil field worker walks away from an derrick outside of Williston, N.D. Thanks to a surge of production on Bakken shale, the state?s economic growth is tops in the nation ? by far (AP).

North Dakota?s economy wasn?t much to behold a decade ago. But that?s changed dramatically thanks to surging oil and gas production on its Bakken shale.

North Dakota?s per person gross domestic product increased nearly 11 percent from 2011 to 2012 ? tops in the nation for the second straight year, and three times larger than runners-up Texas and West Virginia.

Top 10: Per Capita Real GDP

The U.S. Energy Information Administration spotlighted the growth by GDP in a brief released Friday.

In 2001, North Dakota ranked 38th in real GDP. But crude oil production in North Dakota has more than quintupled since 2007 and natural gas withdrawals more than tripled, thanks to advances in technology such as horizontal hydraulic fracturing. The growth has brought plenty cash and new faces to the once-sleepy state.

Not every energy state has fared so well.

Wyoming?s per person GDP fell more than 1 percent between 2011 and 2012, worst in the country, except for Washington D.C. Alaska also declined.

For a host of reasons, Alaska, once the nation?s oil king, has seen production plummet over the past two decades, creating budget troubles that Republican Gov. Sean Parnell hopes to reverse with a massive ? and controversial ? tax cut for producers.

Meanwhile Wyoming?s tax revenue has fallen almost 17 percent from its pre-recession peak, according to the Nelson A. Rockefeller Institute of Government, partly due to increased competition and a nosedive in natural-gas prices that has accompanied the surge in activity.

Alienware 18

The Alienware 18 ($4,499, direct) gaming laptop is an unapologetic show of opulence and riches. It has the power to play AAA gaming titles at full 1080p HD resolution with all the eye candy and quality settings turned up. It will even interface with a pair of external monitors and give you surround multi-monitor gaming out of the box. If you're a gamer of means, then the Alienware 18 is the gaming system you can use to show off, whether you're in the country club, upscale artisanal coffee shop, or over at your buddy's mansion. It's our new Editors' Choice for high-end gaming laptops.

Design and Features
The Alienware 18 has been totally redesigned from the older Alienware M18x ($4529) chassis, but it is still undoubtedly an Alienware creation. The system retains touches like the Alienware silver alien head logo on the lid, though now LED-backlit diagonal lines cut into the lid join it. The trackpad itself is now fully backlit, though it doesn't have an etched logo like the Razer Blade (2012) ($2,499). At the very least, it's an improvement over the trackpad on the M18x, which is only ringed by light. Bucking the trend toward one-piece trackpads, the Alienware 18 still has two physical mouse buttons below the keyboard.

Speaking of lights and the keyboard, the Alienware 18 retains the multiple-zone AlienwareFX lighting system. There are 10 different zones that can be lit in different colors, and the lighting system supports full spectrum color changes. If you want the keyboard keys in a bright aqua green but the sides of the system in burnt orange, you can do that. If your game supports it, the lighting can give you visual cues on player status, pulsing to a slowing virtual heart beat if your hit points are running low. The keyboard is comfortable to use and has a full numeric keypad on the right. The Start key is to the left of the space bar, bucking the trend for gaming laptops to have their Start key on the right side, as seen on systems like the former Editors' Choice Origin EON17-SLX ($4405) and the EuroCom Scorpius ($5297).

Alienware's pre-loaded utilities help the gamer by optimizing the laptop for each game or program. For example, instead of manually quitting programs you usually have open like Word or Excel, you can set the system to auto-quit those programs when you start up a Bioshock Infinite session. If you launch Team Fortress 2, the system could automatically bring up your favorite IM client so you can talk to your teammates. AlienFusion controls the power management on the system, so it can bring everything up to full power for gaming sessions, but shut parts of the system down for quieter browsing sessions or watching videos.

The Alienware 18 has an 18.4-inch 1,920-by-1,080 full 1080p HD screen that is quite clear and makes watching Blu-ray movies a pleasure. The system comes with a Blu-ray reader that can also read and burn DVDs and CDs. Of course, viewing HD videos online is a pleasant experience, limited only by your connection to the Internet via the system's 802.11ac Wi-Fi or Gigabit Ethernet port. Other ports include four USB 3.0 ports (two on either the left or right side), a SD card reader, a mini-DisplayPort, and a trio of audio ports for mic, headphone, and headset. The reason there are three is some gamers preferred headphones have two leads (mic and headphone) while others have a single lead (headset).

The last notable port is the system's HDMI port, as you'd expect the port acts as a HDMI-out for use with an external monitor. What's unexpected is that the same port can be switched to HDMI-in, so you can continue to use the system as an 18-inch HD display after the PC internals inevitably become obsolete. The laptop is nominally user-serviceable, as there is a service manual available on Dell's website. You can remove the battery for replacement, but it requires a screwdriver to remove the bottom plate. Thus, we still consider the Alienware 18 to have a sealed battery because it is a 10- to 20-minute procedure to replace the battery as opposed to the traditional few seconds with a regular removable battery. Likewise, you can access the hard drive, optical drive, system memory, etc. for further upgrades/replacement, though this configuration is mostly maxed out to begin with.

The Alienware 18 comes without any pre-loaded apps aside from the Alienware utilities to control the screen, lighting, and energy usage. This is a good thing, since hardcore gamers hate performance robbing utilities like anti-virus and firewall programs. Our review unit came with Windows 7 Ultimate, which is the prime choice for most gamers. Windows 8 is available, but since the system doesn't have a touch screen, that's not our recommended configuration. The system came equipped with 32GB of memory, which is more than enough for today's games and programs.

The system also comes with a 500GB mSATA SSD as the boot drive, with a 750GB 7,200rpm SATA hard drive for data storage. This is perfect for the gamer, since he probably won't fill the 500GB SSD too quickly, and will still have the 750GB for storing downloaded videos and games that he doesn't play as often. The SSD boots fairly quickly and launches apps and games in seconds. The whole shebang is portable, but you won't be holding it on your lap for long without support: the system weighs 12.02 pounds alone. The system comes with a one-year basic warranty.

Performance
Alienware 18 The Alienware 18 is a powerhouse system. With its new fourth-generation Intel Core i7-4900MQ, 32GB of system memory, 500GB SSD boot drive, and dual Nvidia GeForce GTX 780M graphics cards, the Alienware 18 destroyed the competition on the game grid. It returned the highest, smoothest frame rate scores that we've seen on both Aliens vs. Predator (89 fps, maximum quality) and Heaven (87 fps, max quality). Likewise, the system is able to dominate on both 3DMark11 tests we ran. The Alienware trumps the Eurocom Scorpius, Origin EON17-SLX and the Maingear Nomad 17 Ultimate ($2,824) on all the 3D based gaming tests. The Alienware 18 is no slouch on the multimedia tests either, though Origin is able to eke out a very slim lead on those tests. Keep the Alienware 18 close to a power outlet: short battery life of 1 hour 58 minutes isn't enough for a long gaming session. Besides, you'd want full power for your gaming sessions.

The Alienware 18 is a huge gaming laptop, but it throws performance, features, full-featured keyboard, smooth trackpad, customizable lighting, lots of I/O ports, and a great screen into the mix. It's the high-end gaming portable gaming rig you'd want if you want to show off, and if you can afford the just under $4,500 price tag. The Alienware 18 beats the Origin EON17-SLX on flash, performance, features, intimidation, and looks. That's a recipe for our latest Editors' Choice for high-end gaming laptops.

VIDEO: 'I Need Help' San Diego Mayor Says

In a video statement to the people of his city, San Diego Mayor Bob Filner conceded Thursday that he has "failed to fully respect the women who work for me and with me, and that at times, I have intimidated them."

But as San Diego's KPBS reports, the 70-year-old Democrat also says he has no plans to resign. Instead, he is seeking "professional help" and asks that San Diego's citizens "give me an opportunity to prove I am capable of change so that the vision I have for our city's future can be realized."

San Diego's Union-Tribune writes that "the mayor had been under siege for two days after his political allies went public with unspecified allegations that Filner had sexually harassed 'numerous' women, including city employees. They called on him to resign from office."

KPBS adds that:

"It has been a summer of scandal and accusations against the mayor, who has only been in office a little over six months. Filner and City Attorney Jan Goldsmith have been embroiled in a bitter political feud, with the Republican city attorney accusing the Democratic mayor of being abusive.

"Both sides are accusing the other of engaging in questionable ? even illegal ? behavior. The mayor may have kicked Deputy City Attorney Andrew Jones out of a closed session City Council meeting, but the City Attorney's office is now being sued over inappropriately leaking a redacted transcript of that same meeting. Andrew Jones is also one of the names Filner singled out for firing when his budget cut $1.4 million from the City Attorney's budget."

Before becoming mayor, Filner was a member of Congress from 1993 through the end of 2012.

Toomas Heikkinen makes most of late opportunity for Global Rallycross win: Heikkinen passes Tanner Foust on final turn as Ford sweeps podium at New Hampshire

Heikkinen passes Tanner Foust on final turn as Ford sweeps podium at New Hampshire

By: Autoweek Staff on July 12, 2013

Toomas Heikkinen won the Global Rallycross event in New Hampshire on Thursday.

Ford Racing - Toomas Heikkinen won the Global Rallycross event in New Hampshire on Thursday.

Toomas Heikkinen won his second consecutive Global Rallycross event of the nine-race season, capturing first place in the Sylvania Silverstar zXe at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Thursday.

Heikkinen overtook Tanner Foust after a last-corner accident ended Foust's dominating run.

?Yeah, it was a great day for me,? said Heikkinen. ?Although it has been a long day with rain in the morning, but the finish was really exciting for me. I was in third a lot of the race but passed for second and then on the final lap my spotter was telling me to push and so I was putting the pressure on Tanner [Foust]. He made a mistake and that was the key to my win today."

Foust, who finished fourth, slammed into the outside guardrail on the elevated hairpin, losing the lead in the main event for the second year in a row.

?That was a tough way to end the race -- that's never fun," Foust said. "Topi (Heikkinen) was pressuring for the whole race, and then on the very last straightaway, it seemed like he had a little bit of a run. So I thought I'd play it safe -- my spotter said he had a chance on the inside, so I played it safe and hit the brakes on the inside corner to protect the turn. But there's just gravel from all the rain, dragging that mud out. As soon as I touched the brakes, I knew I was in for a pretty wild ride. The car just rotated, went straight into the wall, and then was face-to-face with Brian [Deegan] coming in at 100 miles per hour.

"The first events of the year, the first six seconds have been the most exciting, and this one, it was the last six. I don't know what hurts more, but it was a pretty exciting day. Hopefully it was a good show.?

Brian Deegan finished third to make it an all-Ford podium as Ford drivers accounted for the top five places.

Heikkinen, Foust and Ken Block won the three heat races. Foust and Block both scored top five finishes for the second year in a row at New Hampshire. Foust finished fourth in both races, while Block finished fifth each year.

?I think it was difficult for everyone, with the raining and drying," Heikkinen said. "There were a lot of different things. For all of us, we had a tough day -- it was tricky to change your setup every time. Even the qualification was a little bit different for everybody. But all in all, it was a great day.?

New Columbia church broken into twice this week

? NEW COLUMBIA ? Vandals twice broke into a New Columbia church this week, busting their way through a door, then ruining electronics by urinating on them and writing graffiti on the walls, authorities said.

State police at Milton are investigating the entries at God?s Missionary Church on Ridge Road, which are believed to have occurred late Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

Pastor Matthew Ellison discovered the first break-in Wednesday when he found a door had been damaged.

Services were held in the church Wednesday night after the mess was cleaned up. However, Ellison discovered Thursday morning that the vandals had struck again, coming in through the same door as the night before.

Nothing was stolen, but items including books and the American flag were thrown about. Water was poured over laptops, the copier, a paper shredder and other electronic equipment.

At one point, the culprits crawled into the ceiling and fell through into Ellison?s office, where they urinated all over the place, police said. The ceiling fan was ripped down as well.

There were derogatory remarks written on walls and chalkboards, Ellison said. He said he had no idea who the perpetrators could be.

Ellison estimates the damage to be more than $4,000. State police continue the investigation and ask anyone with information to call the barracks at (570) 524-2662.

Protestants attack Belfast cops over blocked march

BELFAST, Northern Ireland (AP) ? Protestant hardliners attacked lines of Belfast riot police Friday as Northern Ireland's annual mass marches by the Orange Order brotherhood reached a furious, chaotic end with running street battles at several urban conflict zones.

In north Belfast, police girded in flame-retardant suits and helmets deployed a half-dozen armored cars to block a road that Protestant Orangemen wanted to use to march past a hostile Catholic district. Men jumped on top of the vehicles blocking their path and, as crowds of blocked marchers built up behind them, threw bottles and bricks point-blank into police lines. Many in the mob cheered as at least one policeman, struck and knocked semiconscious, was pulled back by colleagues.

Officers responded by firing a massive mobile water cannon at the rioters, knocking at least one man off an armored car and leaving him sideways on the pavement, his forehead bloodied. But the Protestant crowd kept swelling and launching objects into police lines, forcing officers to respond with volleys of snub-nosed plastic bullets in a failed bid to force the crowd to retreat. Amid the melee, a second injured officer crumpled to the ground.

Leaders of the Orange Order vowed to keep Protestants rallying to the confrontation zone until police caved in and permitted the march past the militant Catholic district of Ardoyne, the most bitterly disputed spot on the Belfast map. The police commander, Chief Constable Matt Baggott, said his force would stand its ground and gather video evidence against potentially hundreds of rioters.

This year, a British-appointed Parades Commission barred the Orange parade from using the main road beside Ardoyne to return Friday night to their nearby Orange lodge because, for the previous four years, Irish Republican Army die-hards based in Ardoyne had attacked police with gunfire, grenades, firebombs and other weapons and wounded more than 250 officers in the process.

Friday night's clashes at Ardoyne and several other Catholic-Protestant dividing lines in Belfast threatened to overwhelm the 4,000 Northern Irish police and 630 reinforcements imported from Britain who were trying to keep control of the streets for "the Twelfth," Northern Ireland's official sectarian holiday, when the British Protestant majority commemorates a 17th-century military victory over their Irish Catholic foes.

Police faced angry crowds in several other areas, particularly around Short Strand, the only Catholic enclave in otherwise Protestant east Belfast. There, rival crowds of youths traded salvos of bottles, bricks and golf balls over high security fences called "peace lines." Police advised motorists to avoid much of north and east Belfast to avoid becoming trapped in the mob violence.

Before the rioting began, Orange leaders marched to the Parades Commission headquarters and unfurled a banner that read, "We will not be defeated. No surrender."

While insisting they didn't want Protestants to attack police or Ardoyne Catholics, Orange leaders laid blame in advance for any bloodshed on the Parades Commission, a cross-community panel that since 1997 has restricted Orange marches from passing near Catholic communities.

"The Parades Commission are showing that violence pays. By their actions they've created this crisis," said the Rev. Mervyn Gibson, the Orange Order's chaplain and a former police officer.

When asked whether Protestants should respect the Parades Commission's legal authority, Gibson said no.

"We cannot accept something that is so deliberately stacked against us. This is not about 300 yards of road. This is people trying to get home," he said.

Catholic leaders accused Orangemen of violating a series of Parades Commission restrictions during morning parades through Belfast.

They noted that some of the order's accompanying bands of fife and drum ? called "kick the pope bands" by both sides in a candid admission of their intention to irritate the Irish side ? ignored orders not to play overtly sectarian tunes as they passed an inner-city Catholic church, a venue for previous street fights.

Bands similarly ignored those instructions as they passed the church again in the evening. Accompanying crowds chanted anti-Catholic songs.

And Protestant supporters of the marchers temporarily overwhelmed police units at the area, sprinting around them as flak-jacketed officers on foot shouted "Cordon! Cordon!" in a failed bid to keep the Protestants from running into nearby Catholic areas and throwing rocks at the windows of homes.

"The Twelfth" commemorates the July 12, 1690, triumph of Protestant King William of Orange against the Catholic he dethroned, James II, in the Battle of the Boyne south of Belfast.

The Orange Order, founded in 1795 as a force for uniting disparate Protestant denominations under one anti-Catholic banner, was instrumental in creating Northern Ireland in 1921 shortly before the predominantly Catholic rest of Ireland won independence from Britain.

Catholic clashes with police over Protestant marches triggered the rise of Northern Ireland's modern conflict in 1969. The issue has defied resolution despite a two-decade peace process that has delivered paramilitary cease-fires, British military withdrawals, police reform and a stable Catholic-Protestant government.

Friday's parades attracted unusually heavy crowds, reflecting exceptional sunshine on what was the hottest day of the year. Among the Belfast spectators, many bedecked in Union Jack-patterned hats and sunglasses, was a sleeping infant bearing a bib that read, "My 1st Twelfth."

In Praise of Good Grammar (And When It Goes Bad) - Life As A Human

If we get rid of cursive writing, how will people know how to sign their names?Get rid of cursive writing? Stop requiring children to memorize the multiplication tables? Yes, these are two issues that have been talked about in the education field lately. Why learn to write cursive when we type on computers now? Well, some say writing cursive helps brain development, and it certainly is faster than printing. Besides, how will people know how to sign their names?

Memorizing the multiplication tables has been a necessary part of math since forever. Now, we can just take out our smartphones when trying to compare prices in the grocery store. No need to memorize.

This dumbing down has also extended to grammar. Being a grammarian, I am offended by attempts to get rid of grammar rules simply because they are ?too difficult? for people to grasp.

For example, there was a rumor, or at least a suggestion, that we forget the distinction between who and whom because it is too difficult to understand. Likewise, even Webster says that we can now use their in the singular (e.g., Everyone is bringing their dogs: Everyone is actually singular, matching the singular verb is; and their should also be singular to agree; the correct pronoun is the clunky his or her. Rewriting is the best solution.)

Since the purpose of writing (and speaking) is primarily communication, why do we need to follow grammar, punctuation, and spelling rules, anyway? As long as we can understand what someone is trying to say, who cares if the grammar, punctuation, and spelling is correct? Well, although I can?t think of a good reason why, I care! And you probably care too. And your English professor will care. Probably your boss will care too. There is something to be said for consistency and pattern.? And ?rightness.?

Let?s switch from the philosophical to the practical. You probably see or hear mistakes in writing and speaking all the time?.and perhaps some of them drive you nuts! Perhaps you wish you could just take a marker and correct mistakes you see on signs and menus. In fact, two people did just that a few years ago. They drove across the United States, correcting hundreds of signs along the way (search online for The Great Typo Hunt).

There are lots of confusing issues in the English language: grammar, punctuation, word usage, spelling, and pronunciation. Here are just a few of the more common:

?

1 - Using a comma instead of a period or a semicolon between sentences. You cannot use a comma to separate two complete sentences unless you use a conjunction, such as and or but.

Example:
Wrong: I got the tickets, I hope you can come with me.
Right: I got the tickets; I hope you can come with me.

?

2 - Using? your instead of you?re. Maybe it?s just laziness?

Example:
Wrong: Your welcome.
Right: You?re welcome.

?

3 - Confusing lay and lie. Remember that you must lay something.

Example:
Wrong: I think I will lay down.
Right: I think I will lie down. I will lay my blanket down.

?

4 - Pronouncing the word mischievous as mischeevious.

?

5 - Using the wrong verb form.

Example:
Wrong: have went, have swam, have rang, have wrote
Right: have gone, have swum, have rung, have written

?

Who and whom, affect and effect, I and me and myself?.I could write a book! I did! Two actually.

Finding Chris Hondros: Film to explore life of slain war photographer through images

Chris Hondros and Joseph Duo were the unlikeliest of friends. One was a veteran war photographer for Getty Images based in New York, the other a Liberian soldier who had dropped out of school in the 10th grade to go to war. Their lives couldn?t have been more different, save for a fleeting moment in July 2003 when an iconic image tied them together forever.

It was a photograph Hondros took of Duo, a commander of a militia backing then-Liberian President Charles Taylor, as he leapt in the air with rapturous joy moments after firing off a rocket-propelled grenade at rebel forces during the country?s deadly civil war.

The image of Duo frozen in mid-air, drunk in the glory of war, became not only an iconic reminder of the deadly conflict in Liberia but one of the most important images in modern war photography and a finalist for the 2004 Pulitzer Prize. It was one of the most famous photographs taken by Hondros, whose celebrated career was cut short when he was killed in an April 2011 mortar attack alongside fellow photographer Tim Hetherington while covering the war in Libya.

The story behind that photograph?and the subsequent friendship between Hondros and Duo?is the backbone of a documentary journalist Greg Campbell hopes to make about Hondros. Campbell, the author of ?Blood Diamonds? and Hondros? best friend, launched a Kickstarter campaign this week to fund ?Hondros: A Life in Frames,? which will explore the photographer?s life by telling the stories behind some of his most famous photos.

?Most people just know about him through his photography and the images he shared with people around the world, but at the same time, he was also an amazing person behind the scenes? who got involved in the lives of his subjects and attempted to help them out by doing more than just taking their photographs,? Campbell said. ?Not a lot of people know about that aspect of Chris because he was very humble (and) it?s a story that deserves to be told.?

One of the key stories to be explored in the film is the relationship between Hondros and Duo, who didn?t formally meet until 2005?two years after what was a chance meeting in Liberia. In 2003, Hondros had merely happened upon Duo and his militia of young men, many of whom were barely teenagers, as they were caught up in a fierce firefight in the capital city of Monrovia.

Duo?shirtless, dreadlocked and ?manic,? as Hondros would later recall?had beckoned the photographer to join his rag-tag platoon on a narrow bridge as they battled rebel soldiers. Within seconds, the commander had hoisted a rocket launcher onto his shoulder and fired toward his enemy. As it detonated, Duo spun around and leapt in the air, shrieking with joy?a jubilant battle dance captured in full view of Hondros?s camera. Moments later, Duo was gone, off to the next battle. Hondros hadn?t even had the chance to learn his name.

But Hondros, who moved on to cover other conflicts, including the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and subjects closer to home including the 2004 and 2008 presidential elections, couldn?t forget about the man on the bridge.

?He constantly wondered what had happened to him,? Campbell recalled.

In 2005, Hondros went back to back to Monrovia to look for the man in his photo. With some help from locals, he found Duo, then 28, decommissioned and unemployed, living in poverty with his wife and three kids.

Duo told Hondros that he wanted a better life, and while they were little more than strangers, Hondros felt a kinship with him and wanted to help. Within days, he had found a private school in Monrovia that would not only let Duo enroll and finish his high school education but would teach him how to use a computer, an important skill in a developing country. Hondros paid for Duo?s tuition, telling his friends that he simply wanted the man to have a chance at determining his own fate.

But what Hondros?s closest friends did not know until after his death was that the photographer had continued to play a role in Duo?s life over the years, checking his report cards and even paying for part of the man?s college education as he studied criminal justice.

Campbell said he found out about his friend?s generosity after Duo contacted him and others who had been close to Hondros on Facebook to pass on his condolences about the photographer?s death and tell them how important he had been in his life.

?I kept thinking about how much I was learning about Chris through this guy?s unique context, and how he was learning about Chris through my eyes, and how we might merge our little orbits of understanding about him and each leave a little richer,? Campbell recalled. ?And then we just kept hearing other stories about how Chris had touched people?s lives and had an impact through other photos.?

As part of the film, Campbell hopes to travel to Iraq to interview Samar Hasan, who was photographed by Hondros in January 2005 moments after her parents were killed when U.S. soldiers opened fire on their car in Tel Afar. The image of Hasan, then only 5, screaming and covered in blood, was one of the most powerful images of the Iraq war and one of the first to truly capture the horror of the conflict on the country?s civilian population.

Shortly Hondros?s death, the New York Times tracked down Hasan , who now lives with relatives in Mosul. She had never seen the photo that Hondros took of her. The story was so moving that it prompted actress Jamie Lee Curtis to contact the paper to ask how she might support Hasan or if there was a charity being set up in Hondros?s honor. She subsequently became an early supporter of Campbell?s film, lending her voice to the initial trailer and helping to find financial backers.

The documentary, which is set to begin filming later this summer, comes just over two years after Hondros was killed. Campbell said he had been thinking for a while about how he might honor his friend?s memory. But emotionally, he wasn?t sure if he was ready.

The two had been best friends since they met at age 14 in North Carolina. Campbell fondly notes he was there when Hondros first became serious about photography. Later, in their careers, they had traveled a similar trajectory, covering conflicts in war-torn places like Kosovo and Sierra Leone. While Campbell had taken a break from the front lines, Hondros asked him to join him in Libya only weeks before his death?and Campbell went, leaving a week before Hondros died.

?His last words (in person) to me were, ?We got you out of here unscathed,?? Campbell recalled, ?and he gave me a big hug.?

The two emailed until the day Hondros died?and Campbell said that only recently has he been able to feel that he was in the right frame of mind to pay honor to his friend.

?My grief hit me like a freight train, and for the first year after his death, I was incapable of even processing it. I couldn?t comprehend that he was gone. I didn?t honestly realize how much I loved him until he was gone,? Campbell said. ?I had no distance from it emotionally. I wanted be able to think about it objectively? I don?t want to mythologize him. I just wanted to do justice to his memory.?

Among some in the photojournalism community, there has been a sense that Hondros?s death has been somewhat overshadowed by the loss of Tim Hetherington, who was killed just weeks after attending the Academy Awards as a nominee for his documentary film ?Restrepo.? Since then, Hetherington has been memorialized in books and in an HBO documentary produced by his colleague Sebastian Junger.

In April, photographer Peter van Agtmael wrote in an essay for Time Magazine?s LightBox that the most ?troubling part? of the deaths of Hetherington and Hondros is that ?Chris has somehow been dropped from public view.?

?He was a consummate professional and classical photojournalist; quietly, consistently and diligently covering all the major conflicts since the late 90?s in an even-handed style. Amidst his steady approach are two icons of war photography from Liberia and Iraq. He was also popular and highly respected by his peers,? van Agtmael wrote. ?Yet his name is often mentioned as an afterthought, if at all.?

Asked about that critique, Campbell, who met Hetherington in Libya when he was traveling with Hondros, said one of his main motivations for doing a film on his friend's legacy was that no one seemed to be telling the late photographer's story.

Hetherington, Campbell said, was a ?great person? and ?deserves every tribute that comes his way.? But, he said, ?I didn?t want Chris to become a footnote. I didn?t want him to slip through the cracks and be forgotten.?
